Dec 2017 is when Bitcoin futures was launched and it is the biggest game changer in term of bitcoin movements nowadays .
But yes as you said price should not be the criteria to rank it ahead but most of people and investors just came in for quick profit which makes it looks dirty sometime as no one focus or talk about technology but its price ..
