Chinese Painter Giving Street Blessings Saigon, Vietnam

in #blog6 years ago (edited)

With the New Year fast approaching here in Vietnam, the streets are alive with people preparing for the Tet celebrations. Tet is what Christmas is to westerners.

Lunar New Year will be from 15th February and last for about five days. So right now everywhere you go, it's busy!

Last night I visited District 5, I attended an Art Exhibition about a particular culture that I will share in another post later today after I edit my photos. If you read my post from the other day Ancient Ba Thien Hau Pagoda, Saigon Vietnam 🇻🇳 you will know that District 5 is known as Chinatown. So driving around here, the streets are buzzing with Tet fever!

This one man caught my attention; he was sitting under a hanging lamp on the street side as the world passed by. Painting using a long wooden paintbrush, I watched as he delicately loads up the brush in his bowl of golden paint, before expertly writing from top to bottom Chinese characters. With a flick of his wrist here and there, the results were a wonderfully crafted piece of art.

This man only does this once per year! Specifically for Tet. People will buy these for good luck and success. Many will hang the piece in their business on New Years Day; this is a sign of good fortune.

Keep it real

Great first DTube video!
Did you ask him what the Chinese characters spelt out? Roughly around 10 days until Chinese New Year and Tet.
We shall be doing our first proper DTube video on Tuesday as we have some tasty treats to share!

Thanks :)
Ah, I think this is now my 3-4th video :)

A week today is New Years Day

I think it's our first since we joined or maybe we missed out on videos 1-3.
Thanks for clarifying about Chinese New Year. What a week we have next week Strove Tuesday, Valentine's Day and Chinese New Year. Thinking about it now, we will delay the DTube video to the following week as this coming Tuesday is Pancake Day - in line with Tasty Tuesday's. So, you know what that post will be about.

Look forward to the video :). I found out what he wrote. Translating to Vietnamese its Khai trương hồng phát roughly translate "a successful opening" for your business in the new year.

for my other videos :)

Ah yes, new businesses especially ones with Chinese belief often give offerings to the temple in order to ensure they have a successful business, but we guess it's not only a one time thing. An offering needs to be made every new year too.
We'll check out those videos too ;)

Really great @derekcowan. Especially like the second picture. These painters are so talented and make it look so easy! Resteemed on my page :)

Thanks for the resteem @the189, the painter was very talented!

Wow, thanks for sharing and happy early new year to all who celebrate - I was just in Vietnam two weeks ago, and want to go back already!
