Chapter three
We started to hike through the valley in the direction of the camp shown on the map. When we got near a cave, we heard a weird noise. I pulled out my sword and Ector pulled out his gun. We walked in and started looking for what made that noise.
“Keep your eyes peeled,” I said. I saw a shadow moving behind a rock. I got up close to the rock and looked over. There was a weird creature that looked like a fat bat with one eye. It turned around and saw me, and then it made a strange screeching noise and flew at me. Suddenly, I saw a sword flash and the bat fell to the floor as Cloud jumped out of the darkness.
“Cloud!” exclaimed Ector and I.
“What are you two doing here?” he asked.
“Well, we were sent on a mission by the army to go to a camp near here,” I explained.
“I just escaped from that place,” he said.
“Why did you have to escape from there?” Ector asked.
“Yeah I thought you were in the army,” I added.
“I don’t work for anyone,” he said, “…and definitely not for that king of Avalon.”
“Then why were you there then?” I asked.
“Because they thought I was a spy for Denaria,” he said. “Don’t go up there. It’s the worst place ever.”
“So, what should we do?” Ector asked.
“I think you should come to the country of Denaria with me and stop the real evil,” he said.
“OK, sounds like a good idea,” I said.
“It’s too easy to please you, Rudlin,” Ector said, “but I’m still coming.”
“Great! Let’s head out,” Cloud said. Then we were off to Denaria to stop the real evil.
We walked back down to the Jeeps. I said, “Why did we come down here? Both of the Jeeps are busted.”
“Not this one,” Cloud said, walking over to the old one. He pulled an oil filter. “You’re a mechanic right.”
“Yeah,” I said.
“Then you can fix this,” he said.
“Sure can,” I said. He handed the oil filter to me, and I walked over to the jeep. After I put the oil filter in, I started the ignition. The car started!
“Before we go I need to put the gas from the other jeep into the one that works.” I said. Then I did that. “OK let’s go,” I said. We got in the Jeep. I started it, and we were off.
After we drove for about ten hours, we ran out of gas.
“Well looks like we have to go on foot from here on,” I said.
Cloud looked at the map. “Looks like we have about one day until we get there,” he said.
“Come on Ector, we have to mo-’’ I was cut short by a loud boom.
“What was that?!” Ector asked.
“It must have been a battle happening close to here,” Cloud said.
“Should we go around it?” I asked.
“No, if we go around, it will take another two days. We would have to go over a mountain that way,” Cloud said. “We should try to blend in and get through to the other side.”
“Sounds like we have a plan,” I said.
“Looks like there’s no other option,” Ector said. BOOM! Another explosion.
“Move out!” Cloud said.
As we neared the battle it got louder and louder. We walked over a hill and saw the battle. Most of the fighting was happening in the middle and the armies were huge, so it would be pretty hard to go around.
“How are we going to go around?” Ector asked Cloud.
“We’re not going around,” Cloud said, “We’re going through.”
“How are you going to get through without being noticed? You aren’t wearing a uniform and we are,” I said.
“I’ll just try to blend in with the crowd,” he answered. Then we went down to the battle.
We had to walk through the whole battle. It was a long way to go through to the other side, if we even survived. We started to make our way through the army of Avalon. That was easy, but, as we got closer to the front, it got harder and harder.
“This is getting hard!” I shouted back to Ector and Cloud.
“Tell me about it!” Ector yelled back.
“I have a plan to get past the army of Denaria; just go with it!” Cloud said.
“OK!” I gave him a thumbs up.
When we got through the middle, a soldier for Denaria stopped us.
“Who are you and what are you doing here,” he asked.
“I’m taking these prisoners to Denaria,” Cloud said.
“Fine take them away,” he said.
“That worked great,” I whispered to Cloud.
“I know,” he said. Lots of other people asked Cloud the same thing, and he answered the same every time.
After we finally made it past the battle, we sat down on a rock about a mile away from it. I noticed that Cloud was holding his left shoulder.
“Are you OK?” I asked him.
“Yea it’s just a scratch,” he said, taking his hand off his shoulder.
“That looks terrible!” I exclaimed. It was a deep cut.
“Does it hurt?” Ector asked him.
“Yea kind of,” He admitted. “Can you do any thing about it Ector?”
“Hmm… looks pretty deep,” Ector said, examining it. He ripped off a part of his shirt and bound the cut tightly. “That should help some,”
“Come on we better start a fire. Night will be coming soon,” I said.
“Good idea,” Cloud said.
