Chapter 107: Battle of Cellrebrum

All the regions in the south, west, and now east had collapsed. The Sentray were now closing in on the remaining regions in the north. Most of the central regions had yet to be attacked.

The regions were falling faster than Jennifer had anticipated. It seemed unlikely that the ammunition would make it back in time to defend the region. The mind-controlled prisoners began making improvised weapons with whatever was available within the region. Some of them were intended to be launched at the Sentray, and others were to be used as mines on the path Jennifer predicted the Sentray would take to enter the region.

A day later, the giant flying machine was on its way to the Capital Region. Mida and the ten mind-controlled prisoners were on board. However, even under the best circumstances, it was going to take several days to collect the ammunition and bring it to Cellrebrum.

The Sentray were only a few hours away to the west, and another group of Sentray had emerged from the ocean in the north and were just over an hour away. Using Jennifer's knowledge, the mind-controlled prisoners had assembled a significant number of improvised explosive devices to use against the Sentray. Dr. Cortex and Vulay got into the Head Enforcers flying vehicle. They ascended high above the region to observe the upcoming battle.

‘If we can defeat the ones from the north and the west, we should be able to get the ammunition back in time to fight the ones coming from the east,’ said Dr. Cortex.

‘With the weapons we made in the last twenty-four hours, our chances have increased tenfold,’ said Vulay as she shovelled popcorn into her mouth.

‘Yes, we have about a ten percent chance of succeeding,’ said Dr. Cortex. ‘These creatures are incredibly strong, and there are about twenty times more than we initially anticipated.’

‘The network has become unstable,’ said Jennifer. ‘We may lose access to any technology beyond this region.’

‘I can centralise us from my brain,’ said Dr. Cortex.

‘That would be a worst-case scenario,’ said Jennifer.

An hour passed, and the Sentray from the north arrived. The mines took the first few by surprise, injuring their limbs but not killing them. Some of the Sentray climbed up onto the train line to avoid the mines. The train line was also rigged with explosives. The Sentray triggered the explosives; this killed a few of them. The remaining Sentray took a direct path to the wall across some of the mines.

After triggering about half a dozen mines, the Sentray had discovered a safe path. This caused them to cluster together, and this greatly hindered their progress. The flying vehicles went above them. The mind-controlled prisoners inside the flying vehicles dropped the explosive devices on top of the Sentray. This caused the Sentray to charge the wall. More mines detonated. This caused serious injuries to many of them. The Sentray were now being killed quite quickly.

Eventually, a few Sentray breached the walls of the region. The flying vehicles inside the region opened fire using machine guns. The high-powered machine guns killed the few Sentray that made it over the wall. Most of the Sentray were unable to breach the wall. The explosive devices dropped on them killed them. Jennifer had won this battle.

Less than an hour later, the Sentray from the west had arrived. They stopped short of the region. They could smell the dead Sentray from the previous wave. They began to circle around the region to the north side, where the previous attack had taken place. They began to organise themselves in rows.

The first row charged towards the wall where the dead Sentray were lying. The mind-controlled prisoners continued to drop explosive devices, but they missed as the Sentray were running so fast. The second row then began to charge.

The Sentry in the first row used the bodies like a ramp. This enabled them to jump high enough to clear the wall. They leaped clean over the top. The flying vehicles in the region used machine gun fire again. They managed to shoot and kill the entire first row, but they were now out of bullets. Less than a minute later, the second row of Sentray cleared the wall. The flying vehicles had ascended beyond their reach.

Row after row of Sentray cleared the wall until all the Sentray had entered the region. The mind-controlled prisoners dropped the last of the explosive devices but only managed to kill a few Sentray. All the remaining flying vehicles hovered above the region as the Sentray began to destroy buildings and hunt the Cellrebrum residents.

‘We need to abandon the region,’ said Dr. Cortex.

‘Yes,’ said Jennifer. ‘Centralise us from your brain.’

Centralising all of Jennifer in Dr. Cortex’s brain caused Jennifer to lose control of the giant flying machine. The giant flying machine crash-landed just outside the Central Agriculture Zone. All on board were killed on impact.

‘Time to destroy Cellrebrum,’ said Jennifer.

‘We drop all the flying machines down on top of them while they still have plenty of fuel,’ said Dr. Cortex.

‘Goody,’ said Vulay as she continued to eat her popcorn.

The flying machines flew into the Sentray and any of the remaining fuel tanks. There were explosions everywhere. One powerful explosion caused the flying vehicle Dr. Cortex was in to spin, temporarily, out of control. Vulay was flung out of her seat. She smacked her head hard against the inner wall of the vehicle. The region was ablaze. The remaining Sentray were caught up in the blaze and killed. The region’s residents were also killed.

Jennifer tried to reconnect to the region, but the communication infrastructure was too badly damaged. Jennifer had also lost access to Vulay’s brain.

‘Looks like it is just the two of us,’ said Dr. Cortex to Jennifer.

‘Indeed, it is,’ said Jennifer. ‘That’s fine. I really enjoy your company.’

‘The remaining regions do not look too inviting,’ said Dr. Cortex.

‘Do not underestimate the country folk,’ said Jennifer. ‘Based on the movements of the beasts from the east, I’m guessing Downs Region gives us the best chance to re-establish ourselves.’

‘That sounds like a great idea, friend,’ said Dr. Cortex mockingly.

Both Dr. Cortex and Jennifer burst out laughing.
