The Labyrinth of Belo Horizonte

Good afternoon fellows :)

How are you? So today I don’t have to work yeah. But what can I do to spend the time smart? I know, I’m going to visit the MERCADO CENTRAL de Belo Horizonte (Central Market of Belo Horizonte).

I love it there! It is huge and if you’re there for the first time, you definitely will get lost. I got lost about a thousand times and every time I got to know some new spots there. The Mercado Central is called one of the best markets in the world there is no doubt about it. There’s literally everything you can buy there, starting with local products til furniture!

So you get there, impressed by the size and the many people there. Let’s start with some tea. Not that instant tea powder you can buy in the supermarket. No, my dear friends, the tea there is special and so fresh! You enter the shop there and get overwhelmed of the smell of different kind of teas like mate, a tea very popular in Brazil.

After this, you can look around. You will find some shops with handcrafted honey and other sweets. One of my favourite is Doce de leite. It’s kind of crème of milk with different flavours, coconut for example. You can put it on bread or eat without anything. It is just tasty anyway.

When you’re finished looking for sweets, you probably want to look other things. So go around and you will see lots of handmade art like towels or figures. You can’t imagine how many things I already bought and sent to friends in Germany! These things are very beautiful.

So, now you have tea, sweets and art articles. It is time to get to the main part – food!

At the Mercado Central, there are a lot of regional food and one of the most popular there – and also one of my favourite – is liver com Jilo. Jilo is a vegetable, the taste is comparable with zucchini. I never has been a fan of liver, but the Brazilians let it rest in milk before preparing them. Together with soya-sauce and spices, it becomes very delicious. Simple, but tasty.

And believe me, especially there at this market, they are specialists of liver! There’s such an crowd of people only to eat this and to have some beer. That’s amazing!

So well, my dear friends. That was a brief look on the Mercado Central in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. I will publish some more details of it (especially of the food there), but for that, I will got there with my camera and take some pictures for you. I am going there now and enjoy my lazy day. Heute ist mein freier Tag, yeah. Aber wie kann man am besten den Tag nutzen? Ah, ich weiß, ich gehe heute zum MERCADO CENTRAL de Belo Horizonte (Centralmarkt in Belo Horizonte in Brasilien). Ich bin begeistert von ihm und wenn du das erste Mal dort bist, wirst du dich mit großer Wahrscheinlich verirren. Obwohl ich dort nun schon ein paar Mal war, habe ich mich circa Tausend Male verirrt und immer wieder neue Ecken dort kennen gelernt.
Der Markt gilt als einer der schönsten, besten Märkte weltweit und ich hege daran keinen Zweifel, denn abgesehen von seiner beeindruckenden Größe findest du dort alles, von lokalen Artikeln bis hin zu Möbel!
Du kommst also dort an und bist beeindruckt von seiner Größe und der Menschenmenge dort. Lass uns mit Tee beginnen (oder Kaffee). Aber nicht dieser Schmarrn, den du im Supermarkt bei Aldi kaufen kannst. Nein, meine Lieben, die Tees dort sind super Frisch und es gibt ganz spezielle Sorten. Beim Betreten des Standes dort überkommt dich eine Flut aus verschiedenen Düften wie der des Mate-Tees, ein sehr beliebter Tee hier in Brasilien.

Danach siehst du dich weiter um und entdeckst zum Beispiel handgemachten Honig (also kein Industriehonig) und andere Süßigkeiten. Eines meiner Lieblinge hier ist DOCE DE LEITE, eine Art eingedickte Milch mit verschiedenen Geschmacksrichtungen wie beispielsweise Kokos. Egal, ob du es als Brotaufstrich oder pur isst – es ist köstlich!
Hast du dich mit Süßigkeiten eingekauft, möchtest du wahrscheinlich erst einmal andere Dinge ansehen. Du wirst die Qual der Wahl haben, wenn du dich ein wenig umsiehst, denn es gibt eine Vielzahl an verschiedenen kleinen regionalen Dingen oder Souvenirs, wie zum Beispiel Handtücher oder kleine Figuren. Ihr könnt euch nicht vorstellen, wie viele Artikel ich bereits gekauft und an Freunde und Familie verschickt habe! Diese Dinge sind wirklich schön und nicht kitschig.

So, nun hast du also Tee, Süßes und eventuell ein paar Souvenirs. Gehen wir zum Hauptteil über – der Gastronomie! Beim Mercado Central gibt e seine große Auswahl an regionaler Küche und eines dieser Gerichte – und zugleich eines meiner Lieblinge hier – ist Leber mit Jilo. Jilo ist ein Gemüse, das geschmacklich etwa mit Zucchini vergleichbar ist. Ich war nie ein Leber-fan in Deutschland, aber hier in Brasilien legen sie die Leber vorher lange in Milch ein, würzen sie schlicht mit Salz und Pfeffer und braten sie anschließend an und verfeinern sie mit Soja Sauce. Einfach und gut. Und ihr könnt mir glauben, hier auf dem Mercado Central ist Leber ihre Hauptspezialität! Die Stände sind umzingelt von Menschenmengen, die genau dieses Gericht essen und dabei ein kühles Bierchen genießen möchten. Das ist beeindruckend!

Meine Lieben, das war ein kurzer Überblick über den Mercado Central in Belo Horizonte. Ich werde voraussichtlich noch mehr dazu veröffentlichen, insbesondere über die Gastronomie dort, aber dafür nehme ich meine Kamera mit. Für heute genieße ich meinen freien Tag. Bis bald :)
