The Røyksund canal at Bømlo

in #canal6 years ago (edited)

In high water, small rowing boats could get through the natural canal, but larger boats had to sail around Moster. The Røyksund canal was made wider and deeper in the middle of the 19th century and was completed in 1859 so that larger boats could also use the canal.
The main reason for making it wider and deeper was that it would be easier and faster to get around without having to row or sail around Moster.
In the 19th century, it was rich herring fishing on the west side of Bømlo and this was probably contributing to the canal being built.
Recently, a new bridge has been made over this canal, and the pictures are taken both up from the bridge and down by the bridge fortress.
On the last picture, we can see the bridge from below at the Røyksund canal.

I am glad you find the images bothh natural and beautiful.

Very interesting photos, dear @Siggjo
I especially liked the first one.
It seems that it is a fantastic country and houses like those in which were once inhabited by the elves :-)

Thank you for the comments about the canal pictures @Singa

absolutely amazing houses! they look so pretty that it seems they are not real:) like houses for dolls, you know? from a fairytale:) and they stand so close to the water... with my water phobia I would be afraid to live there;)

I am glad you like the pictures of these houses close to the canal @Taliakerch

That's such a lovely place, nice pictures!

Thank you for your comments about this lovely place @Sifondeseltz

Greetings to you, my Dear friend @Siggjo! These pictures show fabulous beauty! For me, it is very unusual to see houses that are built so close to the water, on the shore of the sea channel. Probably, this is happiness, to sit in a chair, drink hot coffee, near your house and hold a fishing rod in your hands!

Good night to you my friend!

the canal is very natural, and I really like houses on the edge of the canal.
