Alternative Career Switch: Mid-life Crisis

in #career6 years ago (edited)

Almost 15 years down the road now, I am thinking of a career switch.

Working in large corporations where stakeholders siphon all the profits of the company while you gain a measly pay? Slogging for a boss that does not respect what you do and treats you like a slave. What is work-life balance?

For the last 3 years, I was in limbo, thinking of what to do next. To move on from work experience built up over a decade only to realize I am behind times. Becoming obsolete. I came across a laundry list written by Marguerite Ward & Ali Montag on CNBC titled: "27 businesses you can start for less than $1,000".

Can we be our own bosses in this day and age without capital? Let's explore some of these options. Referring to the article/laundry list:

1. Tutor
While I have spent the last entire decade having skills that are not relevant today or for my future, there really isn't much value to teach someone outdated information. I am naturally a good teacher but perhaps I would be better off teaching here on Steemit about #bitcoin.

7. Errand Runner
It seems that everyone's a couch potato nowadays and couldn't walk five minutes to get groceries, food, or leave the house. This led to many errand/delivery services to have sprung up. Logistics and errand services are becoming viable career options due to their lucrative nature and low start-up costs. Once I get a bike license I would sign up to become an errand boy.

9. Freelance Writer
Yes, this is exactly what I have been doing now. I see Steemit as a writing platform for the future and writers can get rewarded fairly. I hope Steemit can change things in the future.

My own suggestion: Crypto investor and trader!
Blockchain and cryptocurrency could potentially generate jobs and careers that never existed today. Being early in the game (although I am a few years late) could lead us to become the pioneers in the long run. Perhaps 20 years from now, we would become full-fledged companies running based on blockchain-related technologies.

@tysler I share the same feelings.

Good luck with your trading and looking foreward reading your next article.

I @danur upvote you @tysler and commented on your blog. because I always support your post. please respect my decision. for our cooperation in advancing the steemit project. thanks

Seems employers do not respect and appreciate. what their employees do..in today's world.. Being self employed motivates you to love what you do with competence given you ate availed with the skills of whatever project you are running rather than being a crook under some harsh employer's arms.. Who wouldn't even take a minute to value your competences however much you try to embrace them ..all they look at is the negative side of whatever you do
This always happens in companies especially if one is a threat at their work place... A threat as in not in negative terms but rather where ones competences and skills overlap those of their employers..Acting smarter and being more fore sighted than your employer. This alone makes them not to approve you of anything but rather brutal harsh ways of addressing whatever you so so that you find your way out of the company
This is different when it comes to steemit where one can exercise their competences freely while being rewarded as well as any other form of self employment where one is rewarded from their own gifts....
I'm glad you thought twice about your job

I think the last one is the most interesting, although I am still not sure about cryptocurrencies, I am a huge fan of the Blockchain technology. Like you, I like to believe that it will be widely used in the future. However, not sure how to start investing in it, aside from cryptos...Time to brainstorm, I guess :)

People can learn lots from your post. As lots of people (including myself).
Last one is epic.

Sometimes we forget how early we actually are in the crypto game. Yes, there are people several years earlier than us that entered the game, but that shouldn't discourage out participation. I agree with the fact that crypto will bring about jobs that never even existed before. It's an exciting world we live in, and such a great opportunity before us. Thanks for the post mate.

You earned youself a new follower :)

@chunger, thanks followed you as well :) as long as we're in the game. Imagine the rest that did not follow suit :/
