It's instinct all right. Cuckoo clocks and cats just don't mix. I don't know if it's the cuckoo bird, the pendulum or even the movement of the chains with the weights on the end.
I received this clock in the mail yesterday after a 25 year search to get a match to the cuckoo clock that I had as a child. It is A black forest cuckoo clock made in Germany during the 1960s and 70s.
Mittens the cat decided to be curious and to my absolute dismay, pawed at the chains.

I was extremely lucky as the clock did not fly off the wall and I was able to untangle the cat from the chains before damage was done. I have since made a ledge underneath the clock where the chains now rest out of her reach.
Cats do the darndest things.
