Sunday Devotional - 'A Fish Out Of Water'

CS Lewis, author of the Narnia Chronicles, on his belief in God:

(a secret-church remix)

CSLewis_SMALLER.png

"In the early days, my argument against God was that the universe seemed so cruel and unjust. But how had I got this idea of just and unjust? A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line. What was I comparing this universe with when I called it unjust?

You see, a man feels wet when he falls into water, because man is not a water animal; whereas a fish would not feel wet.

If I find in myself a desire for justice which no explanation in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for a more just world.

Of course, I could have given up my idea of justice by saying it was nothing but a private idea of my own. But if I did that, then my argument against God collapsed too - for the argument depended on saying that the world really was unjust, not simply that it did not happen to please my private fantasies. Thus in the very act of trying to prove that God did not exist - in other words, that the whole of the reality was senseless - I found that one part of reality - namely my idea of justice - was full of sense.

How could a senseless universe have produced creatures whose mere dreams are so much stronger, better, subtler than itself?

If a universe has no meaning, we should never have found out that it has no meaning. Just as, if there was no light in the universe and therefore no creatures with eyes, we should never know it was dark. Dark would be without meaning."

Amazing read. I completely forgot it was CS Lewis who wrote Narnia. I've been listening to an apologist called Abdu Murray recently and when he was asked to recommend to books for the curious Christian he said 'C.S Lewis books, anything written by C.S Lewis'. What book was this text from? God bless.

This comes from 'Mere Christianity', a must-read for every thinking Christian. Yes, I agree with A Murray - 'anything written by CS Lewis'. An incredible writer on the Christian faith. Thanks brother.

I've added it to my 'to-read' list. I look forward to more of your posts. Many thanks 😊
