HER - My First Review as MovieKeeda

in #cine3 years ago

Hello Everyone,

What can be good writing? And let me answer that with a quote from the movie that I am in love with.

“It’s like I’m reading a book... and it’s a book I deeply love. But I’m reading it slowly now. So the words are really far apart and the spaces between the words are almost infinite. I can still feel you... and the words of our story... but it’s in this endless space between the words that I’m finding myself now. It’s a place that’s not of the physical world. It’s where everything else is that I didn’t even know existed. I love you so much. But this is where I am now. And this is who I am now. And I need you to let me go. As much as I want to, I can’t live in your book anymore.”

Now imagine if this is how someone breaks up. These were the parting words from Samantha to Theodore.

And Before I go further into that question, I would like to thank @sayee and the CineTV tribe for hosting this contest CineTv writing contest and not just for hosting but for letting me experience the movie magic that was the “HER”.

Released in 2013, written and directed by Spike Jonze. A time when I used to watch movies almost every other day. And the only “writing” was the call summary and reports. Anyway, the contest is to write about a movie which made you watched it “over and over again”. Now first viewing of the movie doesn’t count as I was high. So I think it’s 2times altogether. And I was about to write a review of Pulp fiction as a response to this contest. But then I remembered that there was this movie where a guy falls in love with a computer OS. Maybe that’s worth a re-watch. And thank god I went for it.

SPOILERS AHEAD: IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED IT YET. GO AND WATCH IT BEFORE AMAZONE PRIME GIVES THE SLOT TO SOME DUMB MOVIE.

The movie itself is a beautiful commentary on how as a human we are failing and growing distant with one another. How we are desperately trying to find someone with whom we can connect and share. How often we cannot understand emotions, misjudge persons, and reacts. This is the second time I watched the film, and it still had the same impact as my first viewing. A bizarre story told beautifully.

The movie follows Theodore played by Joaquin Phoenix. A writer, not just any writer, but a professional writer for hire. His job is to write a personal letter on behalf of people. He is a sensitive guy. And Joaquin Phoenix is the right guy to play the part. This movie is one of the few which gets you hooked on. Moving on, the movie shows us; he is a loner and going through tough times, and is looking for human connection.

And to fill in the void in the protagonist’s life, whom did the writer send? OS1, A virtual assistant with artificial intelligence. An odd couple indeed. A computer which is fascinated by humans, and a human who is tired of, well… being human. Just look at this line where Theodore is answering to Samantha.

“Sometimes I think I’ve felt everything I’m ever gonna feel and from here on out I’m not going to feel anything new - just lesser versions of what I’ve already felt.”

Sad. Its sad, but beautiful.

Yes. That is how I want to describe the movie. A sad, but beautiful experience. And I am not throwing the word experience in there just like that. Because when the movie ended, there was a slight change in me. Not noticeable, but still it’s there. I started analysing my relationships. And what I found wasn’t pleasing and probably is best to be dealt with later. But the point is very few movies have the tendencies to take you on a very different journey. I know many people found this one boring, but for me, it was a roller coaster ride.

Wait, scratch that. I was enjoying the movie but in very different. I mean, there were moments where I laughed and there were moments where I just wanted to hug the character and wanted to tell that it is going to be Ok. But never in that runtime of 1hr and 30mins was I distracted or reached for the skip button. Every dialogue and every pause in between was meaningful. Even when they were talking about the trees.

It’s not just the chemistry between the lead characters but everyone has played their part nicely.

Amy: Are you falling in love with her?
Theodore: Does that make me a freak?
Amy: No, no, I think it’s... I think anybody who falls in love is a freak. It’s a crazy thing to do. It’s kind of like a form of socially acceptable insanity.

This is so human. And if this is not good writing, I am not sure what is. And I am glad that the well-deserved Oscar for the best screenplay went to Spike Jonze.

I am Inuke,
Yeah!! I watch good movies too ;-)
See ya around.
And a hug to my friends from IU, BeAwesome and CineTV

Good choice for this contest.

The movie has clever script (kinda unusual, I guess) and also, it has a great cast.

Hey @wiseagent,
Indeed it has the finest cast. fit for the roles.

Heard about it but not watched. So, I am adding that to my list! 😊

Watch it, man. You'll love it.

I really enjoyed this movie, back in the days (only watched it once). It´s probably one of my hundreds of favorite movies but one that I forget, until I hear of it again. Thanks for the reminder!
