The Seventh Seal - Ingmar Bergman | [1956]

I didn't expect the first post about films I made for CineTV to be about a contest, but when I read what was asked, a film came to my mind right away and that's what I'll talk about.

Write about a movie you liked most and the screenplay which compelled you to watch it over and over again. You must include details of the writer and any other information that would make it all the more interesting.

I expected to talk about it on another occasion, as it is one of the films that I like the most, but I felt that it would fit perfectly for this contest, since there is not only the relationship of the film to be explored but the aspect of the author with the script, which in fact will take the words that I want you to read.

The original name of the film is Det sjunde inseglet, as it is a Swedish film, where in the American version it was translated into The Seventh Seal.

According to the websites IMDB and RottenTomatoes these are the synopses:

A year before Wild Strawberries, Bergman presented us with the cinematographic masterpiece The Seventh Seal. The film was in fact not the initial inspiration, as it was derived from a play written by the author who did not even imagine that it would become a reference in world cinema.

Ingmar has always sought to humanize pain, suffering, together with love, and in this way in my view The seventh seal brings this brilliantly since there is an association of the seven seals of God, at a time when the church and religion were much more worshiped than today, and the unknown caused much more fear.

Both the play and the film were essential for us to understand almost 100% what the director and author wanted to put as his image in the cinema scene, allowing us to explore an infinite number of possibilities in the theater to act against such a heavy piece of emotions. and texts like that.

It is impossible to talk about this film and not bring to the text the wonderful art above "Death playing chess" by artist Albertus Pictor, which was painted in Sweden at Täby Church.

And the macabre dance is also referenced in the film when remembering the engraving by Micheal Wolgemut called "The Dance of Death", which was a woodcut in Hartmann Schedel's Nuremberg Chronicle.

Woody Allen, one of the best directors currently in my opinion (I'm talking about the professional side, not paying attention to the personal side), has also said he was very impressed by Bergman and classified him as a genius, while giving his opinion on the film The Seventh Seal.

A humor right at the beginning of the film, made me wonder if the film would be a drama, a tragicomic, a subtle comedy where death is sarcastic? I sketched a smile at that moment, the character of Death won me over, now what would the knight have to break this ice? Here's the next image.

And behold, luck brings to the knight, when choosing the pieces, death ends up choosing black, when receiving the pawn of the chosen color he makes an ironic comment again, but this time the knight allows himself to laugh, because he is the one who would make the first move.

If you want to know if death did well in the end and how you will always find everyone at the end even if you try to play a game with her or if the knight managed to postpone the time he wanted to accept his faith to receive death, or refused his faith and with that death would no longer matter?

Eu não esperava que a primeira postagem sobre filmes que eu fizesse para o CineTV fosse sobre um concurso, mas ao ler o que foi pedido me veio na hora um filme na cabeça e é sobre ele que eu vou falar.

Relação Autor x Filme

Um ano antes de Morangos Silvestres, Bergman nos presentou com a obra prima cinematográfica O sétimo selo. O filme de fato não foi a inspiração inicial, pois ele foi derivado de uma peça de teatro escrita pelo autor que nem imaginava que se tornaria uma referência no cinema mundial.

Ingmar sempre procurou humanizar a dor, o sofrimento, juntamente com o amor, e dessa forma na minha visão O sétimo selo traz isso brilhantemente uma vez que há associação dos sete selos de Deus, em uma época que a igreja e a religião eram muito mais cultuadas que hoje, e o desconhecido provocava muito mais medo.

Tanto a peça de teatro como o filme, foram primordiais para entendermos quase que 100% o que o diretor e autor queria colocar como sua imagem na cena do cinema, nos deixando explorar uma infinidade de possibilidades no teatro para contracenar uma peça tão pesada de emoções e textos como essa.

Influência do filme na arte

Impossível falar desse filme e não trazer ao texto a maravilhosa arte acima "Death playing chess" do artista Albertus Pictor que foi pintada na Suécia na Täby Church.

E a dança macabra também é referenciada no filme ao lembrar da gravura de Micheal Wolgemut chamada "A Dança da Morte", que foi uma xilogravura em Crônica de Nuremberg de Hartmann Schedel.

Woody Allen, um dos melhores diretores atualmente na minha opinião (estou falando o lado profissional, não me atentando ao lado pessoal), também já se disse muito impressionado por Bergman e o classificou como gênio, enquanto opinava sobre o filme O Sétimo Selo.

Um humor logo ao começo do filme, me fez pensar se o filme seria um drama, um tragicómico, uma comédia sutil onde a morte é sarcastica? Esbocei um sorriso nesse momento, o personagem da Morte me ganhou, agora o que o cavaleiro teria para quebrar esse gelo? Eis a próxima imagem.

E eis que a sorte traz ao cavaleiro, na hora de escolher as peças, a morte acaba escolhendo as pretas, ao receber o peão da cor escolhida faz um comentário ironico novamente, mas dessa vez o cavaleiro se permite dar risada, porque é ele quem faria o primeiro movimento.

Considerações Finais

Se você quer saber se a morte se deu bem no final e como sempre econtrará todos ao final mesmo que você tente jogar um jogo com ela ou se o cavaleiro conseguiu postergar o tempo que queria aceitando sua fé para receber a morte, ou recusou sua fé e com isso a morte não mais importaria?

Você pode procurar no youtube que há a versão original em preto-branco ou até uma nova colorida que fizeram que você não vai se arrepender de assistir. É um dos mias importantes filmes para quem curte muito cinema antigo.
