Anzen Science Company (https://sci.zone/anzensci) is offering to pay researchers a sum of money for putting the names of clients who contributed nothing to the research as co-authors on peer-reviewed research papers, is it legitimate?

So basically, they are requesting that academics “ghost write” articles for their clients? Well, while this is an interesting business model, where real scholars are offered money to add the names of paying third parties to their author list, it is academic fraud, as several people here have noted. Basically, the rule of thumb is that if you had nothing to do with the paper or the study itself, you have no rights to having your name added to the authors’ list. The interesting side-bar here is that lots of universities interpret “contribution” in different ways. For some big B-Schools, they are invested in getting their doctoral students some visibility in the form of refereed journal articles, so they deliberately soften the contribution requirement. Simply conducting a literature search may be considered sufficient to get you a third or fourth-authorship on the submission. At other schools, if you didn’t contribute directly to the actual writing or stats analysis (in other words, if you did not make a genuinely substantive contribution), you might get an acknowledgement at the bottom of the title page, but that’s pretty much it.

Some people might argue that ghost-writing journal articles and adding a customer’s name is just the logical extension of a set of muddy co-authorship rules that commonly exist. I disagree for the simple reason that academic writing has never fostered a “pay to play” mindset. Do some people get their names put on papers that they had nearly nothing to do with? Definitely. Has it ever devolved into a business model and overtly commercialized practice before like the one described here? Not that I am aware of. It seems grossly unethical conduct.
