This a 1641 Copper Spanish Cob. The denomination is 8 Maravedis. It was originally struck in 1624 as a copper Reale and depicted a lion and castle. It was revalued in 1641 and that's when it earned its counterstamps of 'VIII' and '1641'. This is sometimes referred to as pirate money and was circulated pretty heavily in the Caribbean. The gold and silver cobs are generally what you think of when you think pirate treasure.

Alas, this isn't a gold or silver piece but it is a nice example that represents a living breathing economy.
