What Do YOU Qualify As Good Content?

in #content5 years ago

In my year and a half journey thus far on the Steem blockchain, I have seen countless posts and comments discussing “quality content”. There are those that feel this place should only be for top quality content creators...or professionals. Then there are those that want the masses to be onboarded. Sadly with regular everyday people...you are going to get regular everyday postings. It’s just how it goes and I’m perfectly fine with that. I actually welcome it.

I personally am not interested in most of the random crypto talk, but that’s what seems to be supported the most heavily here. But what about the chef talking about delicious creations? Or the cab driver discussing his crazy fares? The working folks who write about their dead end job? The kid talking about her strufgles or triumphs with schooling? People talking about their cats? Is that good content or shit?!? Because I’ve seen folks here arguing on both sides of the fence.

I personally write about whatever the hell I feel like. It’s mostly nerdy shit...but I also discuss my pups. I talk serious issues like illness and my own struggles...then pivot to a completely fictional piece made to (hopefully) garner a laugh or two. But according to some...my content would not be “quality”. That’s fine...they don’t have to like it. I’m not writing it for them. I’m writing it for me. If it finds someone who resonates with it, that’s great and I’m appreciative of it. But if not, fuck it...onto the next random thought I want to talk about. These are probably the main reasons why I haven’t grown as quickly (organically) as some of my other friends here who have surged past me with support levels. I kinda don’t give a fuck. I just write what I want to write.

I know when I write about the weekly comics that come out, at least currently...my audience is micro penis small. I have the usual regular fellow nerds that are interested but outside of that, maybe a couple take a peek and possibly leave a comment. But to me...That’s exciting! The fact that someone like @janton who has told me several times that he’s not knowledgeable on my world, comes to my post to see the weird random toys that were just released...that right there is the beauty of Steem and one of the reasons I love it. To me, it’s connecting everyday folks who might have a common interest. Are we professional bloggers?!? No...but does it mean we don’t belong?!? Fuck that noise!

I think we all have something interesting to share...finding, networking, building, and connecting with said audience that finds what you have to say valuable...that’s the challenging and rewarding part.

So I’m curious...what do you feel is quality content and what do you dislike? What do you look for when looking for new users to support? When you are scrolling the feeds here, what gets you to click on something from someone you don’t know?

To me, it’s just whatever tickles my fancy. I’ve definitely gone outside my realm of comfort here to try to learn more about something new. I’m also trying to be better about throwing support not just to the friends I’ve made here...which I do feel is important. But to new users talking about weird off the beaten path type shit. We need those people here too. This shouldn’t just be an echo chamber discussing the inner workings of Steem. That is going to get us nowhere fast.

Anyway, lmk your thoughts. I look forward to seeing what you all value and dislike as far as content creation.

I like your content. It's genuine, it's personal, it's entertaining. Exactly the kind that can connect with people. And you reach out to so many people, from my impression. My two cents.

Thank you kind sir. Yeah sorry...I didn’t mean this to come off as a “come compliment me” type piece. Lol. More of a curiosity as to what everyone looks for and avoids and such. But very kind of you. Lol

See?!? This is who I’m not a professional. I can’t even convey the actual point of my post properly. Lol

I figured I could do two things at once :P. Though I guess I only answered part of the question. There are too many things I avoid so I just haven't sat down to get my top dislikes

Gotcha sir! Either way I appreciate the kind words my friend.

I always loved your stories when you told them in person. Now theres this platform and I get to read about it from hundreds of miles away now. I feel content on here can range from anywhere.

The issue I have is how the posts get visability. Yes you can forward a story and the can get the ball rolling. I just feel like an interface with a bigger break down of content categories would help so much.

I'm still new here, but if I want to see content about New York Giants, it feels like it's a needle in a haystack to find those posts.

Thx brother.

I agree that the search functions here are the pits. As is the lack of “communities”. The latter is supposed to be coming and I think can be a big game changer if handled properly.

Also...Giants are dogshit. Sadly. Lol

I know I've been absent, what communication has come out for it?

And yes. I completely understand the lack of giants post now. Its Diarrhea....

For me it is very easy to indentify good or bad content. When you see an effort put in, no matter what the topic is, that content deserves votes. When you see something that can be done in 2 minutes it is shitty most of the time and deserves no votes.

Word. Effort level is important fir me too most of the time. Once in a while something catches my eye. A meme or a quick photo with very little context. But usually effort plays a part for me as well.

Posted using Partiko iOS

Tought question.
De gustibus non est disputandum.
Like : what is good music?

IMHO good content is when you clearly do some effort to create whatever. Generally.

If somebody would take a picture of i.e. tiles from the bathroom he's sitting in and post it in, like, 10 sec... Well, that MUST be a hell of a tile, to be considered a good shit. :)

Edit:
Ah, I essentially repeated words of moon32walker :)

Sure. I think caring about what you put out is important. A pic of a house with a sentence written is probably not going to garner my support or interest as it seems cheap. But maybe there’s a dude out there who loves houses who finds value in it. I dunno. Lol

I’m going to dedicate my next bathroom time post to you. 😜

As for sharing the save sentiment as another, that’s totally cool. I agree with bits and pieces or entire chunks of what everyone here is saying. Also appreciate you taking the time to respond!

I think "quality" is such a personal perception that I don't really feel it should into play as strongly as it does.

Now before everyone jumps down my throat, I just mean that I think that the Steem blockchain is big enough to handle all kinds of conten, and I think the various tribe tokens are beginning to support that concept as well.

Posted using Partiko Android

Agreed. When I see folks drone on about the need for quality content...it just makes me think that they don’t want regular people here. That’s how we thrive and survive I honestly believe. Getting the masses here is how we grow and prosper. Not by only targeting or wanting the elite.

I am all on board with this. Half the stuff folks calling themselves “content creators” crap on about is so damn boring. Like who calls themselves that? It’s like people on Instagram who call themselves influencers.... douchey.

My favorite posts are the ones where people just crap on about their lives and ones where folk’s passions and personalities shine through. This is something I have always enjoyed about your posts.

I am really against these down vote crews that have been trying to gather momentum post HF. I think everyone makes content. You might like it or hate it, someone else might feel the opposite. Just let people be themselves and stop worrying all the time. The block chain is big enough for every level of poster to have a home.

The worst is people complaining about rewards. Like oh I am a content creator, why is this shitposter taking what should be MY reward? That stuff kills me, and sounds sooooo childish. Welcome to life folks.

Influencers. Yuck. Lol

I don’t mind the downvote posse if they are targeting individuals who are clearly attempting to game the system. They know who they are. There’s a lot of that sadly and fuck those people. But yeah, I’m with ya on the mob mentality on “lesser content”. Who’s to say that someone isn’t finding that joke, picture, or meme interesting?!?

I just like real posts. Feeling like that author is really like that. That’s attractive to me personally.

I like your content too . And if I've been absent recently, it's because I've been spending very little time on the platform, in general. You're actually someone I always like reading, because you're funny and honest and post about stuff that matters to you (and it shows). And I like it, even though most of the time, I have no idea what you're talking about :P

I like stuff that's genuine, I like creative people obviously, artists, folks who go out on a limb with a story or a picture or even a random happening. I don't really care about the crypto stuff much either and one of the reasons I feel less and less inclined to be here is that even the micro-penis (so stealing that) amounts of quality content that were being promoted before have disappeared.
It's no longer content, but a recipe. It's a big cooking world where you can't get a pot unless you're Martha Stewart.

I want to see stuff that I relate to. Stuff that's from the heart. Not generic BS people think so-and-so whale might appreciate.

I’ve noticed your absence and I hope you come back to the fold in time as this place hopefully becomes a bit more even for us and as communities grow. I love reading your stories but I get where you are coming from.

Yeah...writing pieces with whales in mind is pretty weak in all honesty...

For me quality content is anything that catches my interest. If i stop to read it and enjoy it that hols it's own quality. Whether it's a picture, writing, video it doesn't have to be a novel, just genuine. Like your stuff.

Perfect answer. If you find interest...which literally could be anything. I agree 100%. There is just so much...kinda...snobby ness about content lately so I was just wondering where some folks stood on the subject. Thanks for your answer. I thought it was perfect my friend.

For me it is whatever I enjoy. I am not really into things like memes, so I may not vote on those, but I enjoy original art and some music. The way things are now the biggest accounts are into crypto and so they tend to vote up posts related to that. We are seeing some new curation efforts that may spread the votes some more.

I have said many times that Steem is really small. We only have a few thousand active users. When it gets much bigger it will be harder for most of us to make much, but I would hope that those can write, draw, sing etc will have a chance to earn. They will have to work harder to get noticed.

True. When looking at it like that, we are still a baby in reality. That is not a large chunk for a user base in reality. It’s exciting to think about if things started to really take off here and really grow. Fun times ahead hopefully. Lol

Appreciate the response as always my friend!

It should be about quality, but also about spreading the rewards wider. We want new users to stick with it.

BTW I saw you voted on this junk post and I assume it was as part of a trail. You may want to cancel it. https://steemit.com/c/@bigdeej/c You could check if you gave him other votes.

I’m with you, @blewitt. We can’t grow this platform if we are creating an environment for elitist content producers. For many people, producing stellar content on a consistent basis is simply not possible or practical. If there is nothing here for them but rewarding the content of professional writers, what would they come here? Why would they stay?

As I’ve shared in other (rather long) comments lately, I believe one of the most splendid thing this platform offers is “something for everyone.” If this platform becomes all about some top tier type of content, I’m out. And I am actually a professional writer and editor in real life. I do not expect the masses to have my skills or capabilities.

Do I think the top content should receive top rewards? You bet! Of course the best content should be highly paid. But does that mean there are no opportunities for those who want to share their pet pictures, their recipes, their daily physical activity or the cool stuff they just added to their wares in their comic book store? 😁

Maybe Steem needs a methodology for people to higher rewards due to demonstrated commitment to quality. That would keep the masses from draining the reward pool for posts that some might not consider worthy of great upvotes. And it would keep this from being a popularity contest. And it would prevent anyone from gaming the system. The top layer of rewards would go to those who have earned that right and the rest would be distributed among the masses. HF22, anyone?

I used to write long, well-written blog posts. They weren’t well rewarded, overall, and due to life stuff I have going on and my crazy job, and frankly my motivation wasn’t there due to lack of results. But if I knew I could be in a top tier of Steem authors and earn rewards for writing great content, I would change my m.o. Right now I post daily — a short, pleasant post with some thoughts, occasionally some humor or insights about the human condition, and some pictures. I use Actifit and tags for my communities and for things like TreeTuesday and WirelessWednesday. This is sustainable for me, and I don’t feel like I’m sacrificing my soul for a tiny apathetic audience.

So yeah... there’s more to fix on Steem. Love ya.

I like that. Something for everyone. Should he our selling point once we get communities here. If that ever happens. Lol

I think that’s the beauty of this place is that we can each decide what’s interesting and reward accordingly. Be it a post about dogs, a recipe for stew, or a review on the newest indie flick. Something for everyone...

Love ya my dear. ❤️

"Quality Content" is a horrible, empty phrase. Does "quality content" have to be grammatically accurate, with proper spelling and clear syntax? If so, there are very few "quality posts" on Steem---on the entire internet, for that matter. But, as Abraham Lincoln once said, "Fuck your useless definition of 'quality.' I knows what I likes.. " (That might not have been Lincoln, now that I think about it.)

Personally, I like art and comics and horror movies and funny shit and old video games and social theory and music---the rougher the better on ALL of thede topics. PUNKY INDIE WEIRD AMATEUR DADA FUNKY AVANT-GARDE ICONOCLASTIC STUFF. That's what I look at and enjoy and upvote. And I'm lucky that I follow so many people who RESTEEM other people's interesting posts! That makes it a lot easier for me to find NEW folks to follow.

Personally, I welcome the "BAD" posts, the goth poetry, the horrifying retail stories, the pen and ink portraits of Donkey Kong and MC Hammer, the recipe for microwave marshmallow surprise, the newest art manifestos, the cool sunset photos, and the excited 15-year-old sharing her first zine, as well as an occasional thoughtful analysis of Wittgenstein's theory of language games or a review of Dave McKean's collage technique in designing the covers for Neil Gaiman's Sandman comics! Bring it all on! I'm ready...

Posted using Partiko Android

Lol. My favorite Lincoln quote! I want that on a plaque. 😜

Yeah. I tend to agree. Even the “bad” posts...if posted with some care behind it...can be valuable. I like discovering something here now and then that I KNOW goes overlooked as it’s kinda amateur looking. But that’s fine. Shit, half my posts look like jumbled shit and that’s ok too.

I agree with you brother. Actually I find myself agreeing with lots of you which is kinda awesome. Seems those I would probably disagree with didn’t respond...as they find no value in my drivel. Lol

So I’m curious...what do you feel is quality content and what do you dislike? What do you look for when looking for new users to support? When you are scrolling the feeds here, what gets you to click on something from someone you don’t know?

What do you feel is quality content

  • Quality content imo is any content that is well formatted, well written, well explained, with good grammar. It doesn't matter the subject of the content. Regardless of it being quality content or not, I think any content good or bad quality should be here, people with bad content can learn and improve and write better content in the long run, and the world is wide, there are always people to like each type of content, so it's always better for them to read it here on our dear blockchain.

What do you dislike?

  • Spam, plagiarism and any post that tries to influence people to do harm to others.

What do you look for when looking for new users to support?

  • Love... love for what they write, love for the subject, love that I can taste, smell and feel just by reading the content.

When you are scrolling the feeds here, what gets you to click on something from someone you don’t know?

  • The title and image are the most important imho. Nothing clickbaity, but something that aligns with what I like to read or offers a subject that I would like to know more about.

I like your content m8, it's one of a kind on the Steem blockchain, which means that it will drive comic fans to Steem and also, I'll learn a lot by reading it.

I love the thought of content that is not so good in terms of grammar and spelling being able to evolve into something a bit better. We all learn and grow in life..why not here too?!? Great point.

Yeah, if you are just copying and pasting shit...that’s what I hate as well.

It’s funny as I still have yet to master the art of title and thumbnail photo. Sometimes I think I get it right and others I look back on later going “wtf was I thinking?!?” Lol.

Appreciate the love my friend.

I kinda don’t give a fuck. I just write what I want to write.

And this sentiment is exactly why I have stayed here, trudging away, on Steemit for almost three years now. I love wandering across a post that reads like I am talking to the person who authored it. My blog is just an extension of me, I write about exactly what I want to write about, and have met the most amazing people because of it.

The world is saturated with all manner of over-produced, streamlined attention getting things that I think lack an authenticity that many of the blogs I discover on Steemit contain.

I am definitely looking forward to reading more of your posts!

I agree with ya. My blog is an extension of me as well. I like the real raw feeling of feeling like this person is actually like this and its not just a facade. Don’t get me wrong...I like interesting content as well but it’s usually an interesting person that provides that. That person can make a piece about dirt interesting.

I think this is one-way good tribes will be able to help with.

I love writing about League of Legends, but I spend a few hours writing this elaborate post and then get 10 - 20% of the upvotes I normally get.

Should this drive me to quit writing these posts, no, but reality I only have so many hours in a day and if no one on Steem cares about LCS League of Legends than why should I waste my time and write about it?

I'm the same way though when it comes to what's "quality". Quality to me is whatever I enjoy reading about at the time.

Well I see ya started writing again after a couple months away. Welcome back! Lol

I kinda feel the same way about the comic crap I blah. About, although roughing it out and pushing has gotten more folks who have never been into it, to at least start checking out my content regularly. So that’s kinda cool I guess. Lol

But yeah, the tribes can help I hope.

Posted using Partiko iOS

I'm pretty sure what I’m putting out is shit. I like it though, it's fun and a bit cathartic.

Posted using Partiko iOS

Lol. Well it would definitely be frowned upon by a lot but I know people who love memes and shit like that. Hell, Sharese scrolls Facebook daily just for that purpose. I think there is a place here for everyone. Finding our own audiences is the challenge.

"Quality content" is like pornography -- I know it when I see it. :)

I'm kind of in your camp, dude. I write what tickles my fancy at the time and just see what happens. I've had ridiculous luck getting stuff curated that I threw together in an hour, and I've also had stuff I spent sometimes literal days crafting due to research, getting pics scanned, and all that only to come away with a handful of upvotes and twelve cents in curation rewards.

"Quality" is never measured the same way twice around here. :)

For me, despite having close to 2,000 Steem power (I actually have more, but I've delegated over 500 SP to various initiatives I support), my upvote is still relatively small. In a post-HF world, I can bump a post by a single penny's worth of value.

My ability to support "quality" is so limited I find the best way I can do good is to support the folks who I already know are producing good stuff. Maybe later, if Steem goes back up in value or if I luck out on a few hundred more pieces and can up my stake in the game, I can do more. But for right now, my curation support means basically nothing, and I've been doing this since 2017.

I'm here to have fun with my writing. If I'm not having fun, I can't invest the time in doing it. But this is a fun platform which has introduced me to tons of awesome, creative, philosophical, and different-minded individuals. And also your stupid face. What more could anyone want? :)

Well you definitely have a way of writing. Your extensive reviews are fantastic and half the time I’m clueless going in yet I can’t wait to learn.

Supporting a specific user or users I’d something I was waiting for one of you to say and nobody has yet. I like this as well. Once again, I think everyone is different and there is no one right way to show support here. But I think if you find a personality that fir the most part with...you like. Then there is nothing wrong with throwing that user the love.

There are people here that I honestly don’t have much in contact with but became friends with. Or I like what they are doing for the platform...maybe not even necessarily their own content. But I still throw them love as I believe in them. I think there are so many good answers here...really happy with the responses. Thx for chiming in. I know time is a rarity for you inbetween the catfishing, live fetish sites, and chanting that you throw your time into.

Posted using Partiko iOS

To me, quality content is anything that interests me. I don’t think there’s any formula.

Authors with similar interests to mine are more likely to create posts that I consider “quality”
