Depending on the post, Reddit may be better than Twitter for driving traffic. You don't have to have many followers on Reddit, but you do have to be aware of rules/culture, and find a great fit of post and subreddit.
Also don't forget there's loads of other platforms, such as Whatsapp, Telegram, Facebook.

I start the contests more than 24 hours in advance. This makes sure that everyone around the world has a reasonably fair chance of entering and winning (otherwise some timezones would have a substantial advantage).
