How-to make sausage rolls | Mommy daughter cooking including recipe

A few days ago I wanted to bake something with my daughter

We have baked cookies several times now, and I wanted something different this time. I was browsing online to get some inspiration for dinner when I noticed a recipe for sausage rolls. In Holland we loved them, but since we left, we never ate one again. Of course, I could have tried baking them myself, but it never crossed my mind. So this was going to be the first time ever. Let's see how that turned out.

You only need a few ingredients for this recipe

I made sure I had all the ingredients at home and the only preparation I did was putting the different ingredients on the table so they were within reach. Just a few minutes preparation is needed. You will probably discover that most of the time is spend kneading the dough. I'm not that good at it myself, so my little dough balls look horrible, you can do better, I'm sure! This is the recipe exactly as I've made them, personally I'm more a fan of sausage rolls with smaller sausage inside, so is my boyfriend. Next time I will try to make a bit more dough and divide them maybe in 15 balls instead of 10. But for easy reference, I will stick to the original recipe

Ingredients for 10 sausage rolls.

The dough:
300 grams of flour
80 grams of melted butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 bag of yeast
10 grams of sugar
100 ml lukewarm milk
1 beaten egg

Filling:
500 gr half and half minced meat
1 biscuit
1 egg
salt, pepper, and nutmeg

The preparation

Start with the bread

  1. Mix the flour and the salt in a bowl and make a dimple in the flour.
  2. Solve the yeast in the milk and then pour this in the dimple.
  3. Add the melted butter and sugar to the mix.

  1. Knead the flour bit by bit from the outside with the rest of the ingredients until it's a ball of dough. Then continue kneading it for at least 5 minutes making it a flexible dough.
  2. Divide the dough into 10 small balls and let them rest covered with a wet kitchen towel for about 10 minutes.

While this is resting, you can start prepping the meat filling.

Meat filling:

  1. Mix the minced meat, egg and a crushed biscuit. Add salt, pepper, and nutmeg to your own liking. I stuck to this recipe but will add lovage to the mix next time as well.

  1. Divide the minced meat into 10 portions.
  2. Roll the portions to sausages.
  3. Start rolling the balls of dough to oval pieces. No tips on how to do that, sorry! Apparently I suck at rolling the dough, even with a rolling pin.. :) I reckon it's a matter of practice, making it perfect, eventually...
  4. Beat the egg and stroke this on the sides of the dough.
  5. Put the sausages you just made in the middle and fold the shortest sides of the dough over the filling. Then fold the long sides on top of each other. Make sure the edges are sticky enough to close the openings.
  6. Put the side with the openings you just closed down on a plate covered in baking paper. Cover the sausage rolls with the wet towel for another 45 mins to rise.
  7. Start preheating the oven at 200 ºC 15 mins before the rolls are done rising. Stroke a little beaten egg on top of the sausage rolls before you start baking for about 30 mins.

About 30 minutes later, the sausage rolls are done.

You can eat them while still hot, but I've always preferred sausage rolls when cooled off. I just like the bite of the sausages when they are cooled. They are the perfect snack, but also nice for a Sunday (or Christmas, hint!) breakfast or lunch. I'm going to make a bunch of them the next time and put the remaining ones in the freezer.

Enjoy making them (children love this) and also enjoy eating them afterward haha. Let me know what you think of the recipe in a comment.
