NFTs should be amazing for a TCG but we still don't have anything mainstream

in #cryptolast year

Non-fungible Tokens (NFTs) have captured the imagination of the digital world, offering unique and provably scarce digital assets. Among the various applications, the idea of an NFT Trading Card Game (TCG) has garnered significant attention, promising to revolutionize the gaming industry. However, despite the initial hype and potential, NFT TCGs have faced numerous challenges and obstacles, leaving many to ponder why this innovative concept has yet to see widespread success.

It still makes me wonder because the Pokemon company is hiring a blockchain NFT developer. Next company that comes to mind is Capcom with Yu-gi-oh. They could essentially reinvent the TCG genre and make totally new IPs with NFTs and avoid all the power-creep that plagues the current pokemon and yu-gi-oh competitive landscape. Some other issues there are with NFTs would be what follows as to why one hasn't taken off.

I. High Entry Barrier and Accessibility:

One of the primary reasons an NFT TCG has struggled to gain traction is the high entry barrier for new players. Unlike traditional TCGs, where players can easily acquire physical or digital cards at affordable prices, NFT cards come with a considerable cost, especially for rare and exclusive editions. This pricing structure not only discourages newcomers but also limits the potential player base, making it challenging for the game to achieve critical mass and community engagement.

I think some of these companies are just greedy. Take axie infinity for example. You would need at least one hundred dollars to get started. If they model it, say 20 USD for a started deck and 5 for booster packs, that would be much more reasonable.

II. Scalability and Transaction Costs:

Blockchain-based NFTs offer the advantage of true ownership and scarcity, but they also come with inherent scalability issues and high transaction costs. As more players participate in the game, the blockchain network may experience congestion, leading to slow and costly transactions. This can result in a frustrating gaming experience, as players must deal with delays and fees that discourage active participation.

The NFT ecosystem is currently fragmented, with various blockchains and platforms hosting their unique NFTs. This lack of interoperability poses a challenge for an NFT TCG that aims to offer cross-platform play. Players may face difficulties in using their NFT cards across different games or platforms, hindering the seamless integration and portability that traditional TCGs can provide.

It would really kill the long-term viability of a game if you need to pay transaction fees whenever you want to play or trade the cards within the game. Plus, not being able to play easily with a friend would kill a lot of hype as well.

III. Market Speculation and Volatility:

The speculative nature of the NFT market can have unintended consequences for an NFT TCG. As NFT cards gain value due to market speculation, they may become prized collectibles rather than functional gaming assets. This shift in focus from gameplay to investment potential can undermine the game's core purpose, alienating players who seek engaging gameplay rather than financial gain.

Look at Pokemon as a prime example of this. As soon as a new card that breaks the meta is released, it could sky-rocket in price and be banned.

While the concept of an NFT Trading Card Game holds tremendous potential for revolutionizing the gaming industry, it has faced significant challenges that hinder its widespread success. Issues like high entry barriers, scalability, interoperability, and market speculation have all contributed to the enigma surrounding the NFT TCG. Addressing these challenges will require thoughtful solutions and industry collaboration to create a compelling and sustainable gaming experience that truly leverages the power of NFTs. Until then, the future of an NFT TCG remains an intriguing question, awaiting an answer that combines innovation, accessibility, and a thriving gaming community.
