Bitmain has got serious competition. Japanese IT giant has revealed B2 Bitcoin miner with 24 TH/s compared to Bitmain's Antminer S9 14 TH/s. B2 consumes 1950W per unit against Antminer's 1300W per unit. Dough B2 consumes more power than S9, it is most efficient miner on market. B2 consumes 1950/24= 81.25W per TH/s and Antminer S9 consumes 1350/14= 96.4W per TH/s so Antminer S9 consumes 15.5W more per TH/s.
I think that it is great thing for Bitcoin that Bitmain will get serious competition because monopoly of one company is very bed for Bitcoin ecosystem. I expect that techs giants like NVIDIA, AMD, INTEL, ASUS develop their Bitcoin miners because Bitmain last year made a profit around 4 billion and big money attracts big companies.
When all those huge companies enter Bitcoin market, mainstream adoption will accelerate because they will have huge incentive for that.
There are many positive things going on currently with Bitcoin development and future of Bitcoin is brighter than ever in my opinion.

Proof of stake is future but for platform tokens. BTC is different and POW hash power makes BTC safest cryptocurrency.

If electricity is cheap in your country, Bitmain's S9 is still a good buy, but if it is expensive, you may consider GMO's B2. I dont feel it is a great improvement from S9 but competition is always good.
Most important thing is that other players are entering mining business.

Funny that Bitcoin died yesterday for the 200th time in media. No rational mind can think that Bitcoin has no future. Even if you don't know much about it you should at least consider that throughout history money have evolved. Why not consider cryptocurrencies the future money? It's probably gonna take 20 years until it will become a world currency but I'm 100% sure that it will be such as.

I've always wanted to mine but the startup capital has always been a killer.
For a single user Bitcoin mining is almost pointless.
Exactly. I would have to start a mini farm system just to do it. I think there is a town in Mexico that gets free electicity and may make it plausible to mine there but I would still need to buy land to set up a small mining farm. Too expensive for me.

s9i uses 1320 +10% according to the specs on bitmain's site. So we have 1452w for 14th/s which is 103.71w per TH/s.
So the math goes like this:
((103.71-81.25)/103.71)*100= 21.66% more efficient.
Not bad for the first miner they ever released.

With a competition like this, the steemian might be better and bitcoin will continue to run well.

I however disagree that GMO is currently a major threat to Bitmain.
Antminer S9 was released two years ago. I expect that since Bitmain wants to stay competitive that after the release of the S9 they most likely started developing their next Antminer model.
I expect Bitmain will release a new model soon. They probably have something ready already they just didn't release it to the public while they could still profit off of selling Antminers.
You are right but point is that competition is entering field. Bitmain has huge advantage but it will not have monopoly in the future like now.
