Racism as a Rite of Passage

There is a deeply held belief among the American left that racism is the worst thing imaginable. This is perhaps rooted in the history of slavery and lynching in America, which were indeed very bad. But to equate a stereotypical joke or moderately offensive word with slavery and lynching, putting them all under the umbrella term "racism" renders the term meaningless. Racism in its proper definition (pre-judging people based on their race) is not necessarily bad. Certain types of racism can actually be good.

Racism toward immigrants is a rite of passage in America. It’s a way to enforce societal norms and assimilate foreigners into the culture. By calling immigrants from foreign cultures names and mocking their accents and behavior, you force them to change and conform to local norms. Even excluding immigrants from certain establishments until they assimilate (adopt the local language and customs) can be helpful to them in the long run. If immigrants do not want to assimilate into American culture, then why would they leave their homeland?

Of course such racial "hazing" towards new immigrants can be taken too far. For instance, if physical violence is inflicted on people just because they’re different. But the general name-calling and mocking of immigrants is mostly benign and actually helpful to those on the receiving end. It makes them and their offspring true Americans who then become racist toward the next wave of immigrants, regardless of race.

The truth is racism in America has very little to do with race. The Irish in the 1800s faced much of the same racism and insults as blacks at the time. What is called “racism” in America today has almost nothing to do with skin color and is more to do with culture.

The woke like to complain about “racist micro-aggressions” toward foreigners and are attempting to eliminate such behavior from society. However, it is those very micro-aggressions that help assimilate foreigners into American culture, which all but eliminates racism toward them in the future.

White American Christian conservative Trump supporters who are anti-immigration are more than accepting of Black and Latino American Christian Trump supporters—because they share the same culture. Meanwhile, supposedly anti-racist progressive liberals will hurl all kinds of hate-filled insults at a black MAGA supporter. Culture trumps race in America (no pun intended). Racism is a means to unify culture.
