TOPIC:
Trial of Paul before Felix - the accusations

BIBLE READING:
Acts 24: 1-9

Qs. 2,8. See Questions HERE.

DISCUSSION:

The Jewish High Priest, Ananias, engaged a professional lawyer, Tertullus, to bring charges against Paul before Felix, the Roman Governor of Judea. (This was a position previously occupied by Pontus Pilate). Read vs. 2-3 again. Was this opening remark a sincere compliment as court courtesy or an open remark to win favour from the Governor? Notice the three key charges against Paul (vs. 5-7):

  1. Trouble maker who stirs up riots. This suggest that Paul stirred up rebellion against Rome.
  2. A ring leader of religious sect, the Nazarenes. - "Nazarenes" was used for Christians. The implication was that the Nazarenes operated without Government permission and therefore, we're likely to be rebellious against Rome.
  3. He defined the Temple in Jerusalem. They framed charges against him as a dangerous enemy of both the Roman government and the Jews in order to persuade Felix to execute him. Have you ever an individual or a group of people bringing verbal or written charges against you to falsely accuse you? How did you feel?

To consider:
