They say popularity is subjective, and that may be true if you don't have data and will just base it on opinions and hearsays. In the internet world, data exists, and it is used for rankings. It tells us how popular a platform is based on the number of users, page visits, and other factors.

Disclaimer: I am not a website data analyst, and all the data provided in this post is sourced from SimilarWeb. The information and rankings presented are based on SimilarWeb data and should be treated as such. Additionally, please note that any other statements or opinions expressed in this post are solely my own and should be interpreted as subjective viewpoints. It is always recommended to conduct further research and verification before making any decisions based on the information provided.
Note: The data provided in this post is not meant to put down decentralized social media. My goal here is to motivate decentralized social media users to do their share in promoting decentralized social media.
Websites are ranked based on many factors such as the number of users, bounce rate, page visits, geography of the audience, and more.
I have used the SimilarWeb Extension to check how decentralized social media platforms are ranking.
SimilarWeb is a company that provides web analytics and market intelligence services.
What are the factors that make a decentralized social media platform popular?
Number of users: This refers to the number of users visiting the website.
Bounce rate: This is when a user enters a website and leaves without visiting another page within the website.
Pages per visit: This indicates how many pages within a website a user visits before leaving the platform.
Average visit duration: This is the average time a user spends on the platform.
Without further ado, here is the data for some decentralized social networks. This is not arranged according to rank
I did not include Publish0x because it is not a decentralized social media platform.
Publish0x is not a decentralized social network. It is a cryptocurrency-powered publishing platform where users can create and publish articles on various topics such as cryptocurrency, blockchain, finance, technology, and more. It incorporates a tipping mechanism where readers can tip authors with different cryptocurrencies for their content.
While Publish0x leverages blockchain and cryptocurrencies for its tipping system, it does not operate as a decentralized social network. It functions more as a content platform where authors can share their articles and readers can discover and engage with the content. The platform does not have the decentralized characteristics typically associated with social networks, such as user-controlled data, censorship resistance, or community governance.
Here is the ranking of Publish0x in case you want to see it.
Now that we've seen how decentralized social media ranks, let us now see how centralized social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., rank and how many users they have.
Let's combine all of the platforms running on Hive (peakd, hiveblog, ecency etc) and assume it has 2 million users per month in total. That is roughly 1.1% of the users on Facebook.
Like what I've said in my note at the beginning of this post, let's do our share in promoting decentralized social media if we want it to succeed.
Most decentralized social media platforms will not promote themselves (I have also noticed this in blockchain games where promotion is very minimal). They are depending on users to promote the site, which is why there is a referral reward system.
If you think decentralized social media is good, promote it. What is the use of a social media platform if there are only a few users? Let's aim to at least outrank Tumblr, LinkedIn, Quora, Reddit, and other centralized social media platforms that are not in the top 3.
