How to make bio-char (charcoal) in a wood stove

in #diy6 years ago

Probably not something very many people need to make these days but certainly worth knowing how to do. I use charcoal as a soil amendment to my garden as well as a water filter for my aquaponics system. I make a few batches of charcoal throughout the winter and it's enough to make my own potting soil, supplement my aquaponics tank, make polishing compound and make a few marking tools.

Another interesting thing you can do with charcoal is to powder it and use it to make home made black powder, or something very much like it anyway. There were a bunch of videos on that subject on youtube, but these days with all the censorship, who knows...

That's a pretty neat process for making small amounts of charcoal, not something I would have thought of.
You said that you use it as a filter medium for your aquaponics? I'd be interested to know what that's all about. I've been experimenting with aquaponics for the last 5 or 6 years, and I can always use more ideas on that. Perhaps you could do a post about it sometime.

Thanks, I've been using small amounts of charcoal in the media beds to help eliminate algal bloom problems that I've had in the past. It also has helped a lot with water clarity and nitrogen spikes. I'll try to get a post up about it in a couple weeks when hopefully I'll have my greenhouse cleaned up.
