This is a podcast version of a video from Day 168 of going off-grid. I went 'off grid' six hundred and sixty-one days ago and it has been quite the journey since I got dropped off at this old fallow farm and built (continue to build) all my own infrastructure. I have been video documenting the entire process and have just recently begun publicly sharing some of the videos. I have been sharing the videos privately since I started the entire process which I call Jacob Goes Off Grid In The Woods. 'Day 1' is the morning after I arrived at this little place in the mountains in the 'dead of winter' on January thirteenth of two thousand and seventeen with my dogs, my wits, minimal gear and very little hard currency to work with. Slowly I have done my best to breathe life into a very old farm and give it all my best, 'learning as I go', and documenting the process as best I can. Jacob Goes Off Grid Day 168 Part 1
Day One-Hundred-Sixty-Eight Part One:
In this video I talk about getting up first thing in the morning and working in the new homestead area cutting back more brush and hauling it with the wagon to one of the brush piles.
I talk about compacting down the newest brush pile by climbing on top of it and jumping up and down.
I talk about how it is best to cut everything (the vegetation) back as far as possible from where a building (living area) is going to be. I talk about how this is good for a number of reasons from snakes, to rodents, to insects (especially ticks), to fire and to reveal the terrain to see how the water flows.
I talk about picking all the ticks off my big hairy dog every other day and explain how it is quite the time consuming task because of how thick her fur is.
I show where I did a lot of weed-eating around the shack area and talk about while doing it a giant black snake appeared next to me and how I did my best to not disturb it and let it move away at it's leisure.
I talk about seeing a six inch long oragne-red colored salamander with black dots and how cool it was to see it.
I talk about seeing a giant toad that was the size of my fist and although I do not say it in the video I think it looked a lot like an invasive bufo marinus (cane toad) that is very harmful (fatal) to dogs if they pick it up with their mouth.
