DTube is the first decentralised video hosting site to ACTUALLY happen, thanks to the amazing work of @heimindanger
Check it out here: https://dtube.video
We have been waiting a long time now for SteemQ to deliver, but alas they did not.
To quote the words of heimindanger himself,
"the SteemQ project announcement made almost five thousand dollars in rewards, but never got released and ended up being rebranded - It's still not functional after more than a year, and even the current alpha uses a back-end server for everything and is therefore still centralized. I am sure I wasn't the only person disappointed by SteemQ."
As a filmmaker
I was indeed disappointed with the lack of progress towards a decentralised equivalent to YouTube.
But now we finally have it!!!!
I posted my first film there a few hours ago: https://dtube.video/v/samstonehill/9sfwlk7d
...and whilst I am still getting to grips with a few things (or potential glitches with the voting percentage function?) it is really easy to use and understand.
Thank you @heimindanger for your hard work and I look forward to uploading there on a daily basis.
The One Question...
If the 25% fee is paying for the storage of this content, a 1hour film which makes $1 payout is giving so much less than a 30sec film which makes $1000 payout.
Yet the 1 hour film is clearly using more storage space.
Am I understanding this correctly?
I would appreciate it if anyone who understands this better than myself could clarify this point.
If this is the case...
Well, it would seem to me that a better system needs to be found.
From what I heard, the 25% is only provisionary as long as nobody else is taking responsibility for the costs. Witnesses for example could instead use their earnings to pay for the storage and give more of the rewards to the authors.
Great post Sammo, and @beanz that's what I've read too. Your question on larger files is great though and confirmation is definitely needed on how we will move forwards mate. I also had questions about the IPFS hosting longevity, I saw in @heimindanger's post that the content is covered for the first couple years automatically which is great. It would be cool if there could be call for some sort of automated repeat order to draw from the post earnings and keep it alive, at least until it no longer can self sustain itself.
and you just sign up with your steemit account? I have so many short workout videos that I never shared on youtube, only eventually on fb or instagram.
Yes it's really seemless in that sense, I signed in using my steemit username and my private POSTING key.
interesting. where do I find my private posting key?
Yeah that's important whenever using any 3rd party service for the steemit blockchain.
Just click your icon, top right, click change password and then on the left see PERMISSIONS, click there. Then you will see all your other keys, you will have to enter your owner key to reveal some. I very rarely log in with my owner key and only on my own main device, when doing transfers for example. Hope that helps :)
Thank you Keni for being the super helpful friendly person you are :)
I am having an issue with Dtube. I tried to upload on it, but the wheel of death just spins and spins, and my uploads are never uploaded. Anyone else have this issue? What am I doing wrong?
Yes I had the same problem, actually wanted so much to upload to Dtube that I pushed my vlog update back 3 days and still ended up having to use my youtube for now. If/when I can figure out what the issue was I feel I'll still be uploading to both for the foreseeable.
Yeah I know!! Once I can upload to both, I would. But I guess for now, I just have to wait. :S Sucks though.
And there is another version of DTube in the works...currently in Alpha stage: https://alpha.view.ly/new
What I like about this one is the convenience of the YouTube link up. No more need to find original files and re-upload.
Only catch.... don't know when it will be a functioning Beta site!
So for now it's full steem ahead on DTube for me....
Hey thanks for you comment above. You know real recognize real man, like vibes attract.
Thanks for this info on the view.ly alpha, I actually was waiting on updates on this project before I ever heard of dtube. That's a huge advantage for those with large libraries on yt, great to know.
I did have this issue a little at first but after a few attempts refreshing the page and starting over, it worked. And now seems to work consistently.
Oh really?? I guess, I should try again. I had almost given up completely. Thanks for the tip.
Looking forward to the content you will present on DTube. Also it's a smart move as you are the first to do online courses on steemit and crypto on DTube.
Thanks very much. As a group of passionate Steemit users we are all excited to share our knowledge to help others....
Very well, thank you for sharing. I congratulate you
thanks :)
the idea its awesome , but i hope that the version will be improved :)
lot of work needed to be in the top

Interesting.... looking at it now. I like the YouTube link feature. Much simpler than uploading the source file again. Lets see when the beta comes out...
Yeah that is what I like more
