I believe that many folks really do not get the second amendment to the constitution, because they do not read the complete text:

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

—Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America

The first part is the reason for the amendment... to provide for a well regulated militia. The second portion is how to provide for a militia. This was the original intent of the 2d Amendment.
