The other day I went to work and found these little guys being unintentionally led to their doom by their mother.
For context, I work at a water treatment plant that produces drinking water for a large city.
This particular morning, mother duck decided to go for a swim in one of our sedimentation basins. Her ducklings tried diligently to follow.
What mother duck had failed to realise were the existence of two deep and narrow concrete sludge removal channels that run either side of the long, rectangular basin.
It was pretty lucky that I got to work when I did because had it been a few minutes later and all nine ducklings would have fallen into this channel and met a grim fate, with no possible way out.
It took a bit of doing, but I was able to save and relocate the baby birds to safer waters.
One day, I might get the time to tell the whole story.
For now, enjoy the cute photos and know that all 9 ducklings are now safely reunited with Mum in the reservoir, far away from the water treatment plant itself.
