Is E Commerce a BOOM or a Standstill in Cambodia ?

As I was reading an article in the Phnom Penh Post on the E commerce industry in Cambodia.
I started thinking about certain questions that can clear up my thoughts on the unclear demands for on line shopping within it's region.

Questions entered my mind......

Are the consumers of Cambodia really in the mind set of ordering things you are not able to see or touch ?
Answer: Yes they are and the online industry is rapidly growing to prove that there are consumers within this region who enjoys on line shopping.

Are Cambodians into the Malls and Shops because it gives them a sense of adventure instead of online at home ?
Answer: Yes, Shopping malls and these huge department stores are still new to this region. So there for it is a task in itself to find good consumers but it is rapidly growing.

Is it the lack of access to Computers via Internet ?
Answer: Yes, the limited Internet penetration the region has to offer has a big effect on E commerce in Cambodia.

Is it to new for consumers to adapt to ?
Answer: No, it is not. Why ? because as new generations evolve. There will be different results and different adaption towards a much more convenient way to pursue on line shopping.

Is it the lack of Payment Preparations ?
Answer: Yes, Payment Preparations are a big factor. Cambodians lack access to payment alternatives such as credit cards, banks or even debit cards. It is often pay on delivery which makes consumers difficult to make a decision let alone trust.

Is it the fear of shipping and handling / logistics ?
Answer: Yes, Consumers here in Cambodia are very picky when it comes caring for their goods. Often Cambodia has little trust on the courier handling the package Itself.

Will they still be on the “pay when delivered” role call that is often practiced through out the region ?
Answer: Yes and No....Yes to those who live in areas far out of communities and for those who still has those trust and assurance issues.

Well it is now heading into 2017 and since 2012 July, German-owned Internet start-up platform Rocket Internet started the first ever online shopping site in Cambodia (shop.com.kh) selling electronics, open and shut down its servers but this is now something that everyone is trying to “ get a piece of the action”.
A new generation has sparked through the fireworks of Cambodia within the E-Commerce extravaganza. From “Nail polish to Drones”.........you can purchase it all online now. Though one might expect that its not quiet that easy.....”to order something on line”.
Well, YES IT IS....

Here within Cambodia, building a trust relationship with valued customers is key essential for a thriving on line industry that is taking shape.
Most businesses that are open and owned basically NEEDS to be issued a Business operating licence or permit of commerce.
Most of who'm I acquired company to often state that having an online business abroad is a hustle and a hassle in itself with the rights, rules, regulations and laws.

So that probably explains the online thrive and extravaganza with the Online shopping industry here in Cambodia.
“Belated drafting of an e-commerce law that is expected to be passed sometime next year according to Dr Sok Siphana, Principal Attorney of Sok Siphana & Associates, and Advisor of the Royal Government of Cambodia.”
“The law as such is currently awaiting submission to the Council of Ministers.”

What's noticed of all sellers, vendors, markets, shops and stores here in Cambodia. Is that many vendors aren't aware of a law that is being proposed to the government at the moment. Belated drafting of an e-commerce law that is expected to be passed sometime next year and with strong partnerships, vendors, banks, and distribution channels. Governing the authorization of sales procedures and proceedings will give consumers more trust and reliance on their purchases. In which will provide security and assurance........but in the meanwhile. Cambodia is indeed picking up on the trend as their neighboring countries such as Thailand and Vietnam by taking the advantage by advertisements through a sales response using one of the biggest social network ( FACEBOOK). Cambodians are keen to make a sale.....and found that on line vendors are just as keen. Orders from online in Cambodia are a tricky and trusting Method. It’s one for the company and consumer to have.....”TRUST” in which we call an assurance to the matter.

Thoughts on what is needed to have a successful E commerce Business.

  1. Must have very reliable E-commerce payment solutions
  2. Low-cost distribution to overcome the limitations of poor logistics infrastructure.
  3. The region’s increasing Smartphone penetration and mobile data infrastructure is suited to Cambodia's market.
  4. Our site need to have various solutions to overcome the lack of access to credit cards and banking accounts. We must somehow implement a mobile wallet service that enables customers to pay for goods using their mobile phone.
  5. Post Pay option must be highly considered. The majority of consumers in Cambodia are reluctant to pay ahead of delivery.
"Yes its slowly taking shape but at the same time “preparing for that magical shape to form”
