Student Enrollment In Oregon Plummets As Thousands Move To Homeschooling

More students in Oregon are looking to homeschooling, they're also enrolling in private and online charter schools lately, instead of going with the public school option.

For the central Oregon region the enrollment rates there have plummeted recently.

They've already lost over 1,500 students in some districts. The change signals that many families aren't ready to return to school as usual while they think COVID-19 might still be a problem. Not only that, but there is also likely to be a bit of growing dissatisfaction with public school options and the results families are seeing, which is why they are looking for an alternative to pursue.

They are looking for stability and don't want to have their schedules keep changing, homeschooling is going to afford families more flexibility in designing a schedule that works for them.

Last fall, Oregon saw a drop in enrollment of more than 20k students.

The enrollment numbers that they are seeing now for public schools around Oregon are reportedly the lowest numbers they've seen in the past decade. It had been increasing for years, the last time they saw a dip was around 2012-2013. Districts are likely to become increasingly worried if this trend continues, about losing state funds if too many students go elsewhere.

It isn't only one or two districts either that have seen a decline in students, around the region there has been a dip in enrollment in places like Portland, Medford, Beaverton, Hillsboro, and other regions. Public school enrollment across the state, including charter school enrollment, fell by 3.73 percent between Oct 2019 and Oct 2020.
