Relief from Hiccups and it's unique technique

Helloo all..

This is my personal experience and opinion again as a doctor who worked for around 10 years.

What are hiccups?

An involuntary spasm of the diaphragm and respiratory organs, with a sudden closure of the glottis and a characteristic sound like that of a cough.

How irritating it is?😩😫

Once I had hiccups..which I thought would eventually go..they go but comes back again.It was okay for 12 hours but it's going on and on for 24...48 ..36 hours.
Honestly after 24 hours as a doctor I was thinking about some underlying organic cause like any ulcer or internal gi bleeding etc.
I will come to the cause at last..😊
Here the pain starts coming after 24 hours and you start feeling fatigue.The fatigue makes you tired and you can't sleep.beleive me it's painful and horrible to have hiccups for more than 24 hours.

Then what's the technique for common hiccups?

This technique is to reduce hiccups without any organic cause or any identifiable cause.
1.Hold your glass of water and go to the sink.
2.drink water as usual with one difference.
3.Use the opposite edge of the glass inside your mouth rather than the nearer edge.

When to see doctor?🤷🏻‍♂️

If your hiccups are persisting for more than 12 -24 hours you need to see your doctor.

Coming to my cause of hiccups?🤔

I had a sore throat where we can usually take 2 pills of dexamethasone to reduce the pain faster.
One of the rare side effects of dexamethasone steroid pill is hiccups which will last for 48-72 hours and go off.
So there's my cause...

But this technique gave me rekeif for few hours in between and helped..

Medication- you can use these on doctors prescription.
Metoclopramide,baclofen, promethazine ...

I panic when my hiccups last for hours. I would usually bring myself to a doctor asap. Thanks for this advice ill remember to do this when this happens to me in the future.

Hiccups can last up to 24 hours? Wow. That's really serious.

What is the mechanism of action of this method?

I find the rebreathing technique much simpler and almost all my patients have benefitted from that. But I would really love to know the mechanism of action of this technique.

What I do is get a piece of gum or food and chew on in for a minute or two. And my hiccups go away. It works really well.
