FaceBook Libra. My thoughts. Part # 01

in #facebook5 years ago (edited)

Facebook launches Libra using a false image of "democratization of access to crypto". According to them they will "empower" the masses by giving them access to a good / value that is worldwide in scope. Clearly they promise that billions of people in the world who are not currently banked will have access to a currency that promises to become the currency with the highest circulation in the world. They even talk about fighting poverty. Of course, they already have customers insured.

By January 2019 there were 2,271 million active users in FB.
If we consider that the current World Population is according to the data of Census.gov (2019) ≈ 7.545 million people. We would be considering 30% of the inhabitants of the planet.

We can get many interesting statistics about FB:
According to the study by WeAreSocial and Hootsuite, 43% of the potential reach of Facebook ads are women and 57% are men. 35% of the audience is under 25 years old and more than 90% access through mobile devices.

Interesting, right?

I would like to know the percentage of FB users who have knowledge about Crypto and Blockchain. I'm sure the number will be quite low.

The following link refers to a survey applied to 29,000 people and yields interesting but not conclusive results referring to general knowledge about cryptocurrencies:

What Makes a Coin powerful?

It is said that the Kuwaiti Dinar is positioned as the strongest currency in the world, because its value drives its economy and the growth of the country, and its strength is backed by the production and export of oil worldwide.

But it is the American dollar that is present in all the countries of the world, it is used for international commercial and financial operations and it is a reference for the exchange rates, the world prices, besides that it works as an indicator for the reserves of the nations . Then by its superior adoption this coin is the most powerful.

What would happen in the world if one third of the world's population adopts Libra overnight for the operations of their daily lives?

The only option left to the nations would be to adapt. And because of the speed at which events are happening, they should already be working on this basis.

I have no doubt that it is the Government of the United States of America that is best prepared for this situation, since FB has been operating for a long time as a strategic tool at the service of this administration. This would give him a rather unfair advantage over other nations, but ... who cares?

Hi Juan, thanks for sharing.

There are many speculations around Libra and Facebook, what happens with this remains to be seen. What is clear is that these guys sniff the money and run after it, I think that all this consortium behind this currency is a way to cover the scandals of privacy on Facebook and try to build trust in people.

There is something that is becoming stronger and stronger and it is the potential of crypto, the fact that many bloodhounds come after the chain indicates that it is something that came to stay and that will generate large amounts of wealth in the years to come.

Hopefully we can participate in these riches.

Greetings friend @juanmolia, great article.

When I first heard of LIBRA, I just groaned.

As with any massive corporation, Facebook is working for its own benefit, not for the benefit of its customers / users.

I don't expect Libra to become the major coin that Mark Zuck believes it will become. I expect, and HOPE, that it will just be another worthless shitcoin.

oh holy shit... yeah!!!

i wouldn't worry too bad about it ...

consider this :

  • facebook has about 5% chance of reaching the people who originated and gave birth to planet Crypton, because it's about independence and DE-centralization

  • what facebook wants is a mainstream adoption, = version, but facebook is facebook, they deal with american presidents, russia, china and the EU, they'll never get it unless they accept to be leashed

  • part 3 should explain itself : if it becomes a threat to the dollar, it will die

i wish my VP would be at least the 4 cents it used to with everything combined in one account

but i'm sure it will be again over time

mainstream adoption of fringe notions inherantly includes revolution , ... the status quo will not accept that, and i dont think someone like zuckerberg can sell it to the independent crowd, only to the "investors" who jumped on the wagon 10 years after the fact

moreover, if anything , potentially it could be good because it could point all eyes on FB and distract them from the innovation and disruption happening in some places before it's too late ...

i ofcourse deny having said this as i dont speak

Solid comment @goldmanmorgan. Upvoted.

sa shi bu ri da né (its been a while but i dont know how to spell japanese lol) ... o genki desu ka (?) I hope all is well

and thanks !!!!

What does it mean @goldmanmorgan? :)

:) it's japanese (bad spelling for) "It's been a while, everything ok?"

Most of the people is unaware of all of these. Libra whitepaper is well written for the average joe who barely know about crypto, in other words, for the 95% of the people. This really sounds like a trojan horse and we're trying to figure out what's inside it.

Hi @danielfs,

What I'm going to tell you I must do in Spanish.

Mi pana usted le puso la tapa al frasco.

I think what you say that facebook with libra is a trojan horse you're absolutely right

Whereas Facebook's plans to enter cryptocurrency continue to not sit well with users and regulators.

The House Financial Services Committee said the "systemic risks" posed by Facebook's cryptocurrency platform "are even more glaring in light of Facebook's troubled past, where it did not always keep its users' information safe."

Greetings friends @danielfs and @juanmolina

Hello friend @danielfs, thanks for reading my three publications and leave your valuable comments.

I loved that expression you used. Certainly describes the reality of what this phenomenon involves Libra: It is a true Trojan Horse.

Hi @danielfs

I visited your profile just yesterday and noticed that you didn't post anything in a while.

I'm glad to see that you're still active. :)

Yours
Piotr

Thanks for Your invitation, i belive that this coin will cause that all cryptocurrencies will go up, and the price of Bitcoin will reaches 30000 $ at this year :) or even higher

Hi @juanmolina

By January 2019 there were 2,271 million active users in FB.

I'm not so sure if we can take those numbers for granted. Surely many of those accounts are either not active, belong quite often to same people, were created by online advertising companies (ghost accounts) etc.

And mostly I wonder how many of those users actually do anything else but use "messanger". I don't think FB has such a huge userbase as they claim to have. And surely they do not have much trust from their own users.

What would happen in the world if one third of the world's population adopts Libra overnight for the operations of their daily lives?

Juan, be real. Even if 1% of their users would adopt Libra then it would be surely a huge success. Let's be more realistic :)

Yours,
Piotr

I am still skeptic about the prospect of Libra. In my country mode of payment is still in fiat, and education about digital assets are low to nonexistent, Libra cannot change that easily.

Libra and Facebook have a great responsibility in their hands. Many people trust them and with the release of Libra perhaps they have been hopeful. Hopefully once in operation, all those beautiful promises that appear in the whitepaper are fulfilled.

I care but that does not change a thing as long as people are willing to give all their personal info for a nikkel or less.💕
