John Wick portrait sketching case study 2 : shading and finishing.

in #fineartnow6 years ago (edited)

Good afternoon my steemers friends, as you remember in my previous post of John Wick drawing case study, i had promised there that i will finish the drawing of Keanu Reeves, so finally i had some time yesterday to put some shades on the sketch i had started in that post and had finish it today.

Update

sorry guys as i forget to put the link to my first John wick post, please find it here: https://steemit.com/fineartnow/@jacobkaled/portrait-sketching-case-study-john-wick

so i will start up from what i have finished in that post with a rough sketch of John wick :

Basically i used two charcoal pens, first one is extra charcoal No.4 and the other is soft charcoal pen No.1 , i also used the artistic gum to smudge and erase the extra charcoal, and a thin painting brush i have used mainly in dry brush technique to give the shades a softer and realistic look, please take a look here:

and will start to add some shades and details, i also modify the eyes and the nose, i started by filling the darkest areas of the sketch which are the hair, the eyes and the beard, using the hard charcoal bar, then continued to draw the midtones using the softer charcoal bar, i have also used the gum to define the brightest areas in the sketch and also to smudged and softened the drawing with the painting brush so it gave it the required smoothness,so the result looked like this :

It is still not as realistic as i want it to be, but anyway i am not a big fan of realism so i am ok with it, hopefully Keanu Reeves will not get pissed of and come for a revenge if he saw this drawing 🙂, anyway please upvote and follow and always remember, do not piss John wick off.

Not bad looks pretty accurate from the picture. I knew who you were drawing before I even read the description.

(upvoted// Followed ) :))

thank you @pulse for your nice comment and support, follow you too :-)

Not bad representation of John Wick. I can't wait to see the third one. He's gonna have everyone trying to kill him in it.Especially since he killed someone in the Bar. Crazy underground criminal world he was mixed up in it that franchise. I saw you followed me sometime this past week went on ahead and followed you. Keep up the bad ass
art.

thank you @iandaniels for the support , am following you too, and i am not a big fan of this type of movies but John wick really captured me, the stunning shots with the unique characterization alongside with the embedded sarcasm thanks to the wonderful job of the director had made this movie excellent.

Good job @jacobkaled

thanks @miorrizzuan , i am still far away to reach your level of charcoal drawing, by the way, i see that you are using charcoal powder with watercolour brush, i used to work with black oil colour ( dry brush technique) to draw black n white portraits, however this is the first time i am using charcoal substance instead of oil , can you please comment on the benefits of using charcoal as you are expert with it ?

From my opinion, charcoal powder is much easier to control by using dry brush. But must have a complete set of brushes from the smallest to biggest brush. The most important is to understand the medium we use with a lot of practice and study other people works and technique.

many thanks for this information, you are right in this matter, it looks like the charcoal powered is more easy to use and control, but it tent to darken the portrait, also may i ask if you are using white charcoal in your drawings? i am not using it, but saw a lot of artist do so.

I don't use white charcoal. I prefer use eraser for the highlights
