Waxed My Stumps Today

I Inoculated my stumps with my Phoenix Oyster Mushroom Plugs on Saturday and today I applied the wax to the stumps. I found an old pan and then melted down the pound block of wax I ordered from Fungi Perfecti until it was liquid.

Outside at the smaller stump I removed the wood cap to expose the face and the plugs. I started by first waxing all the plugs over with a couple coats then I hit the entire face of the stump. They said it is useful but not necessary to do, so I made sure to do it. After the entire face was coated I put the cap back on.

Then I went to the big stump to coat it. I did the same and coated the plugs first then the rest of the face. I was able to use the whole pound of wax coating both stump faces.

I waited a bit for the wax to harden, which wasn't long with the cool weather, then I laid a few layers of burlap over the face. The final layers are the shade cloth which is folded over to be 8 layers thick.

HOPEFULLY this is going to be enough for the winter. Though I feel I should now pile leaves or needles over the stumps to help with the cold and moisture retention. I'll see what I feel like doing in the next week or so.
