Liverpool hammer Brighton 5-1

Liverpool carried on their outstanding scoring away from home record as they hit Brighton for five at the Amex Stadium, but manager Jurgen Klopp isn’t getting carried away as he knows his side still have a lot of hard work to do achieve their season target.

The Reds moved into the top four of the Premier League for the first time since August, and they’ve now scoried 15 goals in their past four away games in all competitions.

Emre Can powered a header past Brighton keeper Mat Ryan from Philippe Coutinho's corner on the half hour, and it was 2-0 just seconds later, following a sumptuous Liverpool move.

Firminio now has 11 goals this season

Mohamed Salah ran towards the Brighton defence and picked out Coutinho, who then crossed to the back post for Roberto Firmino to finish the move. It was Liverpool at their very best.

Brazil striker Firmino got his second and made it 3-0 after Salah brilliantly let the Brazilian in. Glenn Murray, who had already missed two great chances, pulled one back for the home side beating Simon Mignolet from the penalty spot after Jordan Henderson fouled Shane Duffy.

Brighton had chances to make it more nervy for Liverpool with a second goal, but the Reds defence held resolutely just days after their abysmal performance against Sevilla.

Coutinho delivered another man-of-the-match performance

As Brighton began to press more, Coutinho eased any concerns about a repeat of Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Sevilla in the Champions League, as the Brazilian scored a low free-kick just 3 minutes from time. It was terrible defending from Brighton as the wall jumped over the ball to let the Brazilian score a goal that should never have been.

Brighton defender Lewis Dunk headed the ball into his own net with the game almost up as Liverpool comfortably netted their biggest win of the season and moved back into the top 4 in doing so.

Liverpool manger Jurgen Klopp was delighted but realistic with his team’s performance. "It looks like we are flying," said Klopp. "Unfortunately it's not like that, we have to work really hard. We need results. In our calmer moments we are a really good team, but we need to carry on. I'm much more interested in the next game. We need the points - we want to stay as close as possible to the teams in front of us."

Manager Klopp was delighted but knows there's plenty of work to do

It was a harsh lesson for Brighton and their manager Chris Hughton, who said Liverpool were the best offensive side his team had faced since Manchester City. "The biggest disappointment is that you have to stay in the game," said Hughton. "They were always going to have more possession, but after 30 minutes we had had the best chance - and then within two minutes we were 2-0 down. You have got to have a level of performance to have a chance. I thought they were very good and gave us a harsh lesson, but we were also below the levels we have set this season."

Brighton hadn’t conceded two goals in a match prior to yesterday’s game, and it will be interesting to see how Hughton’s men bounce back away to fellow new boys Huddersfield next week. For Liverpool it’s the small matter of a Merseyside derby against reinvigorated Everton next week.

Liverpool were very impressive yesterday. Too late for a title run, but contenders for top 4 definitely.

Very good match. I'll be surprised if Coutinho doesn't leave at the end of the season. He's class.

Liverpool keep the fire burning am impressed by their performance

Yes, they need to maintain that level, though.
