Here's my Day 132: 5 Minute Freewrite: Wednesday - Prompt: gardening

Her eyes smile at her, the love unmistakable, “Run down and grab some ice cream out of the freezer, we’ll have it after dinner.” Her great grandmother taps her butt guiding her to the steps.

“Watch out for Tony Macaroni!” Her great grandpa hollers from his chair in the living room, a giant grin on his face.

Her great grandmother scowls at him, “Stop it Vernon!” She scolds turning back to her granddaughter, “There is no such thing as Tony Macaroni little one.” She says pushing her granddaughter’s blonde hair away from her eyes. The little girl knew there was no such thing but loved the game her grandpa played with her.

Her eyes widen with wonder imagining the “guy” that lived in the basement. He would feast on the nuts that were stored down there and take care of the plants grandpa grew that he had yet to transfer to his beautiful garden out back . Grandpa thumped on the ground with his cane as she descended the steps to the depths of the basement, her imagination running wild transforming the damp basement to a cave filled with plant life where Tony Macaroni lived deep within. He would scuffle around the corner as she came down, out of sight at the fear of being seen, only showing himself to his master, the man in the chair that beckoned him.

She grabbed the tub of ice cream, grandpa’s favorite and whispered in her little voice, “I’m taking this for grandpa Tony. Have a good day.” And up the stairs she went into her grandma’s waiting arms. “Can I go play in the garden?” She asked her grandma not wanting to stop her imagination.

Her grandmother laughed, “Of course, go with Grandpa, you can help him feed his creations.” She said and away the little girl went, her tiny hand wrapped around her grandpa’s worn calloused hand she found so much comfort in.

“Hope Tony didn’t get you.” He said bopping her on her nose.

She giggled, “Not this time Grandpa.” She grinned running into the garden that transformed into the jungle around her where her grandpa became her jungle guide. These would become times she never forgot, long after her great grandparents were gone.

You took me back to my own memories and I wonder what kind of a grandfather I will be to my grandchildren. Thank you for this.

BTW, I know I'm late but here is your friendly reminder about today's prompt: https://steemit.com/freewrite/@mariannewest/day-133-5-minute-freewrite-thursday-prompt-the-attic

Im glad I could do that for you! Thank you for reading!

That was a really nice story and so well told, Grandparents are the best! I only got to spend time with one of mine, my Granny, but I spent loads of time with her, as she lived with us for the last 10 years of her life.. I really just love older people and the stories they tell about things from back in the day... I could sit with them for hours with a cup of tea and just listen..

This is so true. I was lucky to have time with both of my great grandparents and my grandparents too. I'm glad you enjoyed my story!

That's amazing that you had time with your great grandparents... Some great stories no doubt, but maybe you were too young to remember.. I remember so many stories my Granny told about the old days.. Simpler times... :o)

My great grandpa passed when I was 10, and my great grandma when I was 18. They helped watch me during the summer and before and after school for my parents. I have some amazing memories and I am lucky they were around for so long and I still have both my grandmas so I still count myself lucky. You are so right, simpler times!!!

That's amazing... Seriously good gene pool there @bleedinheart

Seriously for real, haha.
