I found some nice looking mushrooms at the campsite yesterday. Just perfect for Fungi Friday posting. I would not eat these they have hallucinogenic properties, if they are the ones that I think they are. There are a few different varieties that look similar to them though. These look a bit more orange than some of the similar looking mushrooms that I have seen.

The mushrooms in the post look like they are a deeper red than the ones that I have photographed here. The above post goes into more detail on how to recognize them and boil them for eating. I’m not sure if I’m adventurous enough to try that though.
These mushrooms I photographed might be just an older specimen or they could be some other mushroom like Amanita pantherina. I avoid all Amanita mushrooms - some like the destroying angel are deadly poisonous.

Maybe this is why it is called the fly agaric, look at all the tiny flies all over it. I have also heard that the mushroom was used to kill houseflies by leaving bowls of the juice around for the flies to drown in.

Here’s an overview of where they were growing. There is a nice lake down through the trees but you can’t really see it. There was a lot of fog this morning but that went away towards the afternoon.

Yup, I don't think they would be good eating but according to the article you can get the poisons out.

Sounds like most people think they are Amanita. They do photograph well.

I know a few people who've tried it, but mostly they had a pretty bad time. I'll stick to psilocybin mushrooms if I ever want a trip lol
Supposedly baking them under a broiler cooks out the toxins. Or drinking the water they are boiled in. (But don't quote me on that, it's just hearsay and I'm not really an expert on such things, lol)
They are Amanita muscaria, and commonly called Fly agaric. "Amanita muscaria" is the scientific name. You can hardly mix them up with any other mushroom. ;)
I wouldn't eat it though.
Thanks, yes I'm not planning on trying it but it is interesting that they can be prepared in a way to remove the toxins.
There are only a couple of fungi that I can identify to eat and that is the rat's ear mushroom/fungi and the oyster mushroom. @lightsplasher

I like oyster mushrooms a lot. They are in the store frequently around here. Sometimes you can find them growing on logs too. I've never tried any that I found in the woods though, I'm a bit of a chicken when it comes to identifying the wild mushrooms.
The area is one of my favorite places for camping. I like to head up towards the mountains sometimes too.

yes my friend @lightsplasher my opinion is the same as yours, because I also found this type of mushroom before, but I asked some people they said this mushroom could not be eaten.
Definitely not a mushroom recommend for eating. It is interesting that some mushrooms like this one can be safely prepared if you what you are doing though. (I would not personally try it.)

Yes, there are a lot of big mushrooms around here. The color does have a pumpkin or squash kind of feel to it.

Your fungi are indeed of the Agaric family, but those are: A. muscaria var. formosa which is indeed usually a yellow or orange colour as yours are. They are hallucinogenic too! And it is said they are named the "Fly" Agaric because of it's use, when mixed with milk, as a method of killing houseflies... I am not sure about that - but that's what they say!

I would not dare either. Other mushrooms are usually available.

Yes, apparently if you boil them long enough the poisons and hallucinogens will come out. I'm not sure I want to try them though.
