According to Newzoo, a market intelligence for games, esports, and mobile, the size of the global game market has reached $137.9 billion in 2018, and is expected to continue its steady growth.

Meanwhile, when breaking down the global games revenues into different segments by the game types, each segment reveals different market trends. Along with the widespread use of smartphones, the dominance of mobile game market in the entire game industry stands out, its market share increasing from 36% in 2017 to 41% in 2018.

PC games, on the other hand, is facing decline in its importance in the global game industry. The PC game proportion, represented as the sum of downloaded/boxed pc and browser pc proportions, decreased from 31% in 2017 to 28% in 2018. This trend is expected to continue for years to come.

Despite the decline in dominance of PC games in the global games market, there are long-lived games that are maintaining its popularity for over fifteen years.

In this article, I will introduce you a few online PC games with long lifetime values, that have endured the changing dynamics of the game ecosystem.


1. Starcraft

Starcraft is the RTS game well-known for its significant contribution to mass-adoption of online games and rise of e-sports in Korea. Since its first release in 1998, it has already gone-live for 21 years now, giving life to other sequels such as <Starcraft:brood war>, <Starcraft2>, and <Starcraft: Remaster>. Its main synopsis being the space war between three species, Terran, Zerg, and Protoss, Starcraft has many game play methods including destroying the opponent’s territory or making them surrender, ‘slaughter’, ‘capture the flag’, and ‘Top vs Bottom’.

Also called ‘WoW’, World of Warcraft is the MMORPG based on the same s as synopsis as <Warcraft>, the masterpiece of Blizzard’s. After the launch, it has been re-created into various contents including games, novel, comics, and movies. <Warcraft: the beginning>, the film sharing the same storyline, was a hit at box offices of 45 countries during its opening week in June 2016.

3. Lineage

Lineage, so called the legendary MMORPG is based on the storyline of the comic <Lineage>. According to the announcement made at the showcase of ‘LineageM’, the accumulative revenue of Lineage during past 19 years exceeded three billion dollars. Lineage brought about many issues such as operating working-pools to raise the game characters and trading expensive items, the price of which sore up to several tens of thousands dollars.

4. Sudden Attack

Sudden Attack is the first-generation online FPS(First Person Shooting) game which generated high Internet cafe (PC-room)occupancy since its first release. 6. MapleStory

<Maple Story> is the world’s first 2D side-scrolling type online game where users travel and take adventures in various fields. Due to its popularity, many 2nd creation derived from the game, including mobile and Nintendo DS games, comics, educational books, and broadcasts.



As mentioned above, the game ecosystem is undergoing a dynamic change.
