Virtual Reality is big news, the PC gamers have the likes of Occulus Rift and HTC Vive to enjoy - but the price tag is heavy. Sony have tried to take it mainstream with their own VR kit which comes in just under half the price of the PC versions - you need a PS4 of course and for the most immersive experience two of the Playstation Move controllers - but is it any good?
Certainly if you like Batman films already, you will love being basically immersed into one, the graphics are stunning in this game and the VR literally stands you in the middle of the action, with a 360 degree view around and plenty of objects to interact with.
In the Batcave, here I am playing target practice where you have to grab Batarangs from your tool belt and throw them at the green targets. You also realise at this point that VR is far more fun when you watch someone else playing it, you really have no idea what is around you once you have put the head set on - and you do need a really clear space around you or you start hitting things in real life that are not present in the vr.
The gameplay is more like an interactive story, you can not move your character around in the game world very much - mostly just jumping from point to point to interact with content in each area. In the Bat Cave there is plenty to touch, pick up and switch - which helps you fully immerse into the game world.
Movement is handled by pressing the move button on the control held in the hand you wish to move in the direction of, or by using Batman's grapping hook - which is a fun way to get around the environment. Batman has on his tool belt a scanning device on the left, beatarang in the middle and the grapping hook on the right. You can reach down at any point mid game and select these to use.
Here I use the Batarang to blow up a fire extinguisher next to the penguin, most the game will wait for you to perform a key action or task before it will progress - so you could sit watching the Penguin or a long time before you would realise what you are supposed to be doing.
This is a good example of how fully immersive the game is, Penguins goons sneak up behind me - as you can see turning around in the game environment even works well - although you need the controller hand lights visible to the camera for the game to track them.
Overall this is a good game for the price, it does not take too long to complete it - but then you can go back and find riddler cubes around the locations to unlock additional content. I bought the VR for my boys, however there is a wide range of game content to choose from for it like Job Simulator that it would suit any age and I have been really enjoying playing on it myself.
You can watch the full gameplay video below, I do apologise in it for the poor quality of the gaming graphics, normally I remote play the PS4 on the computer to record the on screen footage. With the VR it will not allow remote play, so this with filmed with my iPhone propped on the chair! Not ideal but you can find plenty of gameplay footage on YouTube if you wish to enjoy the graphics - I just wanted you all to have a good laugh at me waving glowing orbs around in the air!

I've been thinking about buying the PS4 VR. My son (12) and I (42) are heavy PlayStation players. We've had the Move controls since PS3, so we're equipped for the VR. And Batman is my favorite character, I've been playing LEGO Batman since PSP.
Visually, your review reeled me in. Forgive my sin as covet your Sony VR, and lean even closer to dropping hard-earned cash on it.
It’s great fun, the actual graphic quality in the headset is beyond belief - no video will do justice to the 3 dimensional world you are immersed in. There are plenty of varied games for it as well, the PC market obviously has more choice but the headsets for the PC are twice the ps4 . I picked up our headset on ebay, barely used and boxed with the two move controllers and PS4 camera for £350 around $500.
very good game, thanks for sharing @coff33a.😊
Thank you very much for taking the time to look at my post and leave a comment.
That is amazing! We did a virtual reality
test game" probably 25, maybe 30 years ago. Our kids were young, it was at the mall and VR was brand new. The helmet was huge and the graphics were all green lines, like the old "tank battles" arcade game. It has come a long way!
Thank you very much, yes it is quite an experience nowadays and the headset you really do not notice when it is on - the virtual environment is very crisp and clear - it is just like being in the room and interacting with the game.
We may have to give it another try... for the grandkids of course...
very helpful information.thanks for sharing.

I haven't played in games in VR yet. I think it would be fun to try it out. I Because of this post, I wonder now when will be the next batman movie :)
VR is an incredible experience, the quality of the 3D graphics can not be explained - you really can only put a headset on to experience it. I wonder when the next Batman movie will be out as well!
Wow thats really advanced lol You know I stopped playing some years ago. I remember the last game I played on Computer was GTA the first version of it with the small characters. And now when I see this I feel like real life game. Must be amazing. Enjoy your Weekend :)
I used to play the original GTA - those monks that used to run around were hilarious!
That looks pretty amazing but the VR games give me a headache at times maybe its just a sign that I am indeed old lOL
I know what you mean, the headset presses on your head as well which does not help. I found it interesting how the games use a "Jump to point" motion so you don't really walk around - reading up it is to combat motion sickness . It is definately a short dose experience, but the graphics quality is incredible.
That is BADASS! I totally want to get a VR now...especially you know, since I'm Batman.
I held out well over a year on my boy nagging me to get him VR to play, mostly I suspected he would play a few times and get tired of it. I caved in when it was the only thing he wanted for his birthday this year, not much answer to that one. But to be fair he has played it alot, and equally so have I - it wasn't something I would be into but the games are amazing.
I remember elsewhere you mentioned something like COD, I picked up this for the PS4 VR
https://blog.eu.playstation.com/2018/03/03/how-ps-vr-shooter-bravo-team-plays-with-the-aim-move-and-dualshock-4-controllers/
It's taking some getting used to, but once you have the controls down being able to crouch behind say a commercial waste bin, and then peek out the side by moving your head to then shoot at an enemy - really impressive.
Nothing really compares to the experience though, you can watch a hundred reviews and still they only show the screen version of the graphics - what you see with the headset on is something else - a true real virtual world. The only way to experience that is either find somewhere that does demos or invest in it yourself. It's certainly worth it if you have the cash to spare and the time free to play it.
Wow! This is an incredible review of the product @c0ff33a! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much, although I only did it so you could all laugh at me prancing around in the headset waving the controllers around!
I've got the HTC Vive and some of the games in that can get really immersive. I've got a Paranormal Activity game which is a horror game and the sound really gets you immersed in the whole world. But I mostly use my VR for the dancing and rhythm games.
It's funny, my boy was desperate for Job Simulator which is only on PS4 VR so I ended up getting that. Since he has seen Baby Hands as is desperate for that, only available on PC Steam VR - so of course being my son his solution is I buy the HTC Vive so he can play that game! He loves emptying the bank of Dad. Anyway I made it clear that was not happening, but have found you can hack the PS4 VR to work with a PC - so far I got half way VR headset works but the PS4 move controllers although both connected and calibrated with their own PS3 cameras need some bridge software to connect them to Steem VR - and I ran out of time to burn messing with it so it's a work in progress.
The Vive just lowered its price to 499. If your PC can handle VR, I think you will be blown away by the difference in quality between the PSVR an the Vive. I'm just saying... I think your kid may be right on this one.
Wow that used to be my favourite game this is so cool to enjoy :D

That looks really really fun @c0ff33a. Iv'e heard about it but never tried it. Looks worth looking into ( wait a second was I just being redundant lol)i
Nothing will really show the VR experience to you other then finding somewhere that will let you try it, with the headset you move from whatever room you are in to somewhere that is almost more real - the 3D graphics are so good you feel like you are touching or picking up the items.
