Catching Up or Falling Behind? Pokémon GO Fest 2025 and My Ongoing PokéGrind

As my summer vacation abroad started to wind down, I got a notification that brought back a wave of nostalgia: Pokémon GO Fest 2025 was live. For years, this annual event has been a favorite for players around the world, full of rare encounters, global raids, and special bonuses. But this year? I was not exactly in the best spot to participate.

I was still traveling, wrapping up the last leg of our summer adventure, and while I saw the in-game alerts, I didn’t have the time—or signal stability—to dive in like I used to. Still, curiosity got the better of me when I noticed a few Raids popping up nearby. I wasn’t even sure if I already had the Pokémon featured, but on impulse, I used a Remote Raid Pass (yes, I actually paid for it).

The result? A Pokémon I already had. Talk about a misfire.

That little moment pretty much sums up where I stand with Pokémon GO these days: not quite retired, but definitely out of rhythm. There was a time when I could glance at a silhouette and name it instantly—my Pokédex was practically complete up to Gen 4. But lately, I’ve completely lost track. I’m missing most of Gen 8 and 9, and I often find myself not recognizing new Pokémon, let alone remembering if I’ve caught them or not.

Even my storage is a mess. I keep getting notifications that I’m out of space, but I haven’t put in the time to clean house, transfer the extras, or sort through the dozens of Pokémon with random IVs and event tags. And don’t get me started on the Research tab—it’s overflowing with tasks I meant to complete… months ago.

Ironically, this is exactly how my original Pokémon journey went back when I was younger. I was obsessed with the first few generations, then eventually fell off after Gen 4 or 5, and by the time I looked up, I didn’t recognize half the roster anymore. History really does repeat itself.

That said, I’m not done. The game still has its hooks in me—it just ebbs and flows now depending on life, travel, and energy levels. The notifications have actually helped lately, nudging me back in here and there. I know at some point I’ll find the time to sit down, clean out my bag, review my Pokédex, and maybe even complete that lingering stack of Research tasks.

Pokémon GO remains a grind, but that’s part of the magic. Whether you're catching everything or just opening the app for nostalgia, it keeps evolving—just like the Pokémon themselves.
