So if you are a gamer I am sure you have heard of Fortnite. If you are not a game you probably have heard of fortnite. Why, because it is everywhere. And good for them. Before was Players Unknown Battleground, a title I have to always look up. Considering how hard that name is to remember it is impressive how popular the game got :p. Now you cannot watch a stream without someone playing one of the two games. But how did we get here? I think it comes down to one thing, view-ability, which is a term I coining right now.
The world of gaming has changed a lot over the years and the biggest change is that is has become a spectator sport. This come with pro players who would kick your ass online to people who can make you laugh on camera. This means that games that are fun to watch are the ones that become popular. If you have heard of slender Man or Five Nights At Freddy's it is probably because somebody uploaded videos of themselves playing the game and acting scared. It was something people liked to watch and it really helped propel the games into popularity. And yes I would scream like a baby too if I played a first person horror game.
But now we have moved on to the Hunger Games like games. 100 people, only one person or team can survive, and go! This type of game play is great for streaming; it has a quick start, anyone can watch without spoilers, it has an intensity as you don't know if the player will win or not, and it is short enough to digest. These games are made for streaming. And because of that they have skyrocketed into the screens of gamers and views.
There are other factors, like the game is easy to pick up and play and it a quality experience. But the streaming really pushed it into the mainstream. And I think the fact the fortnite is free-to-play is what helped to give the game an edge over PUBG.
What do you think? Have you played either? And if not then get on it for dtube :p
In my opinion Fortnite and PUBG are so popular beacuse in both games when you starting a match u have nothing , no gun , no ammo , no armor, no something to heal etc. NOTHING, and this is beautiful ! Player's have to looking for the gun etc. so fast as they can. Everyone is on the same level I mean everyone has nothing, BUT some of players have "skill" if u know what I mean and they know where have to go to find the things you need to survive and they know how to shooting. I prefer to play in PUBG beacuse this game is more realistic than Fortnite for me. Graphics in PUBG are better than in Fortnite. :D
I agree. I think also its the thrill of (maybe) getting the good items when your looting
In point!!! I agree with you because in all match, all time u couldn't find something good to survive only hm for example (shotgun) and you camping in one of buildings with only this gun, suddenly someone came to you and you got him (bah bah dead) u checking his stuff and ulala scoop x8, something to heal, helmet lv3, armor lv3, M416 and a lot of ammo. This is so beautiful ;)
That's a good twist for a game. Starting with "nothing" is cool. It now depends on the player who's playing what will happen next.
Yes! It's very good twist for a game, exactly! In this game like that everyone have chance to win, why? because u starting play with nothing and this is beautiful of course for me :)
Indeed and if people want to get this game for themselves . they could get it cheaply from this site
https://www.g2a.com/r/epic-fortnite-standard-edition
I agree. The concept is also new, the blue zone, the big map, looting.. Everything is just amazing. I love playing PUBG and Rules of Survival. Haha!
Yes sir! I agree with you, I forgot add blue zone and big map in my com :D Excatly, the rules of survival is the best what can add to the game, like PUBG or Fortnite :)
If you want, you can check my account on DTube @sonofzeus, I have some replays with this game PUBG, and also 2 wins :)
The battle royal concept isn't that new. Its just new for the main stream. I do agree however that the game is good fun.
There is this video game "the flock", a indie horror game. When the in-game population dies, nobody can buy the game anymore. Videogames are surely trying to bring the real thrill to players.
It is this extra thrill however, which makes many gamers lose the zest for a normal storyline because it just doesn't deliver this thrill. As a spectator surely interesting, but I have to admit that personally it makes he game rather work than Joy, because I don't come any longer to breath in the beauty of details in the game. :)
That is interesting, I will have to check it out. Yeah you still appreciate a good story.
Haha, yeah you better become not too addicted to it, otherwise you are helpless should it end suddenly :)
Haha ,agree to that . I’m 90’s kid and saw how game evolved. I myself also play PUBG . but I never tried to record it yet . 😊😊😊
It has really hurt the stocks of publicly traded companies like ATVI, EA, TTWO. These companies will bounce back and make their own Battle Royale games. I can already imagine how fun a Grand Theft Auto Battle Royale style game would be :)
good job
Been streaming Fortnite on Dlive!
Such a fun game to play. Fortnite strikes a serious adrenaline nerve when it's down to the last player/team... The immersive sound effects, intense gameplay, playability, large multiplayer/cross-platform format all make it a serious contender for best game ever created... in my opinion.
What a fantastic gaming opinion article! You made opinions AND played videos games! You win!
PUBG has little perks that other games don't. You get to choose you sights, weapons add-ons etc. Other games just limit you to what they have which is not cool. Player Unknowns Battle Grounds feels more freer. Which I'll be playing now for my new music/gaming idea if anyone wants to help partake.
I've got two boys that play Fortnite. I have to say they like it because it's only about once a fortnight I see them without their hands attached to their keyboards. lol
PUBG is my favourite game forever. Best game i ever played <3 But i will try Fortnite very soon :D
yeah yeah you get it
lol
I have played PUBH , that is hell lot of a game ,cool graphics ,cool gameplay with hot killing ,the motorbike riding , the skydiving ...
I have been playing that game for a long time .....but now i am busy with the job no time to play .....
The best part about the game is live streaming and multiplayer protocol ....that brings in the whole shit to the game...i am a gamer too ....
Yeah real life gets in the way :p. It is pretty sick but I know I suck at shooters where surviving for a long time is a factor.
I guess surviving is the thing that makes it more interesting ...
For watching for sure. Its like a movie.
Hehe ,When you have got ample of time siting on the couch it is better to get some adernaline , best part is the talkin that the gamer do..
fortnite and PUBG are really popular these days. in fact, almost all of my friends play it.
i haven’t played it yet but i tried playing Rules of Survival or ROS. it’s fun too and i recommend yall to play it too. it has simularities with the two. :)) nice post btw
I think people like Fortnite and PUBG because of concept for gameplay. These ones who wants to play BR but they dont have money the re downloanding fortnite. I think BR is too popular at this moment. Everyone wants to have his own BR game so on the steam and on the google play, app store etc. we can easly find hundrends of BR games (most of them aren’t even good).
Ive played both of them and I prefer to play PUBG because I think Fortnite is too fast and too chaotic for me but its still great game.
Probably in few next yers the’ll be relesed a new big BR game which will take the rule over BR games
I love streaming games , have you gone live before i would love to see you brother .
Great post .
Games have gotten so complicated nowadays. I watched my nephew play "Fortnite" a week ago or so. I thought he was going to run around and shoot "like normal", but for some reason he started building walls around himself, and bridges under him.. ??
A few weeks earlier, they visited me and I launched my emulators (See my post on my NES-pallet wood case!), and he couldn't play a simple game of tetris..? Or Micro Machines.. It was "too hard" for him...??
I don't understand. :)
[EDIT: Oh yea, here's the NES.. :) ]
Lol yeah it is weird when you just see a staircase pop up.
LOL That has seen better days. But hey it the light is on, if it works it works. That is awesome man.
Yes, that was the point of the look. :D
Ive been seeing fortnite but ive just been scrolling through, this time i must give it a try, battleground should also become like one of these, that would be awesome
Yeah you should try it, its free maybe you'll like it.
I play Rules of Survival, it is same as PUBG, but you don't need good configurations as for PUBG.
I never make it to the safe zone...killing is the only option lol...The only way I can have fun with the gamers around the world even some may troll how they play it I'm still having fun thats matter If there is a league for this PUBG online game nobody would like to team up with me lol...I'm still at learning process.... :p
lol I am going to take out all 99 in this area alone :P. Nice I would just hide in a truck somewhere.
I hope I can be in your team ... just catch the scenery and enjoy it from the truck lol...
Well i still enjoy playing CS:GO
But when i was playing CS:GO and PUBG Came out then i really started to like Battle Royale gamemode what CS:GO doesn't have
and i couldn't play PUBG because my computer is too bad for that
so when i heard about fortnite it instantly became my favourite game only because it had a Battle Royale gamemode
Just started playing Fortnite a few weeks ago. Love it! I was a big Unreal Tournament fan back in the day and loved the first few Call of Duty's. Fortnite seems like a logical progression for these types of games. You have solo play and team play, it's has last man standing and they are constantly working on improving the game and the options for players. My son plays it as well...actually not as well, he plays much better than me. :)

I have played both and currently stream Fortnite. Both games have different mechanics really. PUBg is a lot slower with more realism with different attachments for guns; while Fortnite is fast paced with building mechanics included. Fortnite was definitely the game I was looking for because I used to be a big Rust player. I was always looking for a game that had the battle royal feel like H1Z1 and PUBg and to be able to build like Rust. This is just my opinion but I believe the Fortnite outclasses PUBg period.
Yes, Battle Royale games, good point, are great for streaming. I still think loads of co-operative games are just as good. When Red Dead Redemption 2 arrives, I'm sure there'll be some ace mini-games there for streaming. Visuals are getting better and better
You have a good point about streaming, my younger brother has almost stopped playing. Most of his time he spends watching streams and talking to people. That is actually how he learned to speak english really well. His teachers are surprised that he talks almost without any accent.
@whatageek, I have been following your game posts and the are awesome. Would be cool to see you play horror games with us on dTube.
By the way, would be cool if you could support our project we make for Steemit lately. It is called SteemApp and we already had the first version released today. Will be glad if you could check it out!

Nice article I really enjoyed
I really need to check out these games.
Tub Cat enjoys Fortnite and wants to stream it on Twitch. But Tub Cat does not have opposable thumbs so struggles with some things, such as using a controller.
Way of the future!#PSN#Moxatron#Squads#4077#GetDownShutUp!
PUBG all the time
Free fire squad 🙌
ive played fortnite lately, its not bad
Yup, I already figured out it was because of streamers the moment I figured out how they're played... I think it's a good thing though, It's just that they're not my type of games~
What about Fortnite on android :I
Both are great games with a high fun factor, but my favourite game is PUBG😌
Fortnite is more like Minecraft with guns but also funny and nice to play. 🎮
A big + for fortnite that it‘s for free🙌🏽
good article you got an upvote from me
PUBG is a blaggy name that's for sure and Fortnite is glossy and colorful giving it more mass appeal maybe.
Both are just great examples of how engaging large online multiplayer games can be and are only the start of what's to come!
I have game PUBG, l like playing games the game is fun 😘
in my point of view fortnite is sucks.its like childish cartoon. But pubg is so fucking awesome.Everything looks so real on pubg.that's why i pubg very much.
I think also people are tired of the same old unimpressive stuff from big game studios lately. Games being destroyed in attempts to make more profit. These games are based on a simple concept. No crazy stories, multiple unique elements that ultimately bug out, no crazy skins. Just give players an environment, ways to interact with the environment, and just let them play. Some of the big games these days like to tell the player how to play or guide them. These are just games that allow the community to sort of guide how things go.
I agree that the short nature of these games is good. It's found a way to mesh the open world post-Apoc experience with a short timeframe, loot/craft then fight mechanism. As much as I like the concept of open world survival/combat games, they tend to be really time intensive. I just don't have that kind of free time in one sitting. Games like this kept some of the fun elements of that, but condensed it. If that happens to be great for Streamers, awesome, but I think of that more as a byproduct than the number 1 reason for its success.
Congratulations @whatageek!

Fortnite sucks pubg wins
Well, I have to be honest. I haven't heard the name of the game. I might like to play this kind of game though. Thanks for sharing because it seems nice and fun.
its bite size action. not many gamers have the patience to play a full story driven game, but want the action that is included, thus they get board easily. Battle Arena type gaming gives you something unique each time you play, and matches are long enough to keep you entertained, but not so long they will bore you.
No doubt the success of "Fortnite" is not a simple coincidence, the game is well done and does not have to be more realistic to be better or worse than "PUBG", I think "Fortnite" has a plus and that is it "FreeToPlay "for all, which makes the community usually larger, therefore the larger the community the more the video game is spoken or shared. when all this euphoria of "Fortnite" is over, we will see which one survives until the end of the "Battle Royale" of both :), the important thing is to enjoy both games and personally "PUBG" gives you more freedom of exploration and the "Fortnite" is more pleasant to see. regards
Agree and disagree with the analysis. I think you're right on the streaming piece, compared to games like LoL/DotA/CS:GO. Streaming is the way games get popular now. Though there is some nuance to the vehicle of marketing.
I don't think you're quite on the mark with the competitive spectator appeal as a sport becoming the appeal of gaming. I think a lot of people over emphasize the impact that "eSports" has had on shaping game design. In fact, most games that are designed largely with this aspect in mind have failed miserably.
The reason why is when this new eSports/competitive game comes out, big streamers are going to have growing pains learning it and that isn't fun for viewers to watch so the game will be avoided. Nobody wants to watch say Lirik or whoever fail at DotA 2 all day. But he can hop into some indie game or AAA title with a high skill floor and pick it up quickly and rather than focus all of their energy on learning the game can balance entertaining the stream and exploring the game.
The free to play aspect is also important, that's a virtual requirement if you're looking to be a top chart popularity game now, there is just so much competition it's hard to justify dropping $30 on a game without having played it for a while.
None of these titles are particularly interesting to watch for me because the strategic value is nil, it's basically a combination of mechanics and luck, but that makes for a good formula for mass market appeal so I guess I understand the dominance these titles are having.
