Favorite gaming experiences: Pinball machines

in #gaming3 years ago

Pinball machines aren't really around that much anymore and that is a damn shame. I can understand the death of the arcade because home consoles became so spectacular that there wasn't really a reason for us to have arcade machines anymore but pinball, well that hasn't been replicated in a home sense (unless you are seriously wealthy) and it really can't be.

Let's just say that I miss them

These days it is a rarity that you ever see a pinball machine outside of a Dave and Buster's and well, D&B's aren't exactly in every town given the what is bound to be massive startup cost associated with opening one. Pinball machines used to be everywhere. I recall when I was a kid that you'd just be in some random gas station and there would be a pinball machine at the front entrance, just waiting for some quarters to be inserted.

One of my favorite machines as at our local 7-11 and it was called "EarthShaker" and it is featured above. The theme behind the game wasn't terribly clear but it had something to do with activating a bunch of parts of the game and then the system would scream "EARTH SHAAAAA-KERRRR" and then release 4 pinballs for multi-ball play.

Everyone loves multi-ball play until they realize that you can't really aim at anything in particular when keeping track of 4 balls as once and it probably doesn't result in getting as many points as you think. It is pretty interesting though and the ultimate objective I think of most pinball games.

Another one of my favorites that became my favorite simply because it was also at that same 7-11 was a game called "Bad Cats" and it functioned just like any other pinball machine and I played it enough times that I can still hear the sounds the game would make in my head when I think about them now.

There aren't many places to play pinball anymore but there are a few spots and mostly they are treated as museums of sorts like "Modern Pinball" in New York City

They have a collection of 40 or so machines in this place including Earth Shaker. Unfortunately there is no Bad Cats but there is one out there somewhere and I would love to have it at some point.

The problem with pinball machines is the immense amount of moving parts inside of them. I know a guy that before he became an extremely successful robotics engineer he was a pinball technician and he would travel around and repair / maintain pinball machines. There were not very many people that were capable of this and therefore he was a very busy boy indeed. He was making so much money in fact that he at times contemplated not going to college as a consequence. I would be willing to bet that since pinball and arcades in general basically died in the 90's, that he is very happy that he decided to go to school eventually.

I miss pinball. I don't think there is a single machine in my entire city. There aren't any that I am aware of anyway and really wish they would come back. But when you look at the production cost of several thousand dollars per machine, the need for constant maintenance, and the fact that the machines weigh as much as a small car, I suppose I can understand why they aren't around anymore. There was a time though!

I visited the Pinball Hall of Fame a few years back in Vegas. This was before they moved to their new digs so I definitely want to go back. We enjoyed high value entertainment for just $20. Took me back to my teen years when game rooms were all the rage. http://pinballmuseum.org/

That place existed back in 2002 and 2007 when i went to vegas but never knew it existed until 10 years ago. If I ever go back to vegas this is one of the main places i am going to.

There's a pinball museum in Ashville NC that i went to and they have a good amount machines that are popular. It's all you can play for like $15. When it comes to pinball in general i love playing Fish Tales and World Cup Soccer which i own both of them on Pinball Arcade. It's not the same as playing IRL but it allows me to enjoy the tables as long as i want to play them. It's hard to say which table i would buy if i ever were to buy one. You can buy a virtual size one that emulates pretty much any table that is available. If i ever do win the lottery I would have want the following

Fish Tales
World Cup Soccer
The Getaway: High Speed II
Fun House
Road Show
Adams Family
Star Trek TNG

I own pretty much all tables on pinball arcade and Pinball FX3 where a virtual table should be enough but it's the originals that make it more fun.

I remember seeing one of those emulators and that seems like something I would like. They physics on it would be tough but hey, at least none of the bumpers can ever break! One benefit of a LCD pinball machine is that there can be multiple levels as well. I'll have to look into getting one of those but I would be willing to bet that they cost a damn fortune.

Love me some pinball!!! Cool story, my buddy Rick is a narrator on Sterns Batman 66 machine! He recorded lines with Adam West & Burt Ward. I still have yet to play one sadly. Lol

They had that pinball machine at the museum i mentioned in asheville NC. Was my most favorite table to play when visiting there. Simple to play and didn't feel like a money waster like some pinball machines with how you games seem short with how bad the ball moves around the table to the point you have very short turns

That’s awesome that you know the exact one. Lol. I haven’t had the chance to play it yet.

Totally agree about pinball. I have never seen or even heard about the existence of a pinball machine in southeast Asia anywhere. We have arcades but I've just never seen one, maybe it has to do with the humidity and all those small moving parts.

yeah i would imagine that extremely wet environments would wreak havoc on a pinball machine or really anything with a bunch of tiny spring mechanisms in it.
