Update of My Garden Edibles - Gratitude #68

in #gardenjournal20186 years ago (edited)

Three days ago I found this challenge by @simplymike through @goldendawne’s resteem. I’d been sharing updates on my garden pretty much regularly and wasn’t sure if I should write another one but my son @reconstitution told me to “go for it” because there are lots of gardening Steemians out there who don’t know about it. So here I am with another update 😊

I started my vegetable patch back in December 2017. I built the raised bed from some old bricks.

This is what it looks like now.

photo taken from my balcony

These are some photos of my long beans. I’ve been fertilising my plants with goat manure (a little every week) and the rainy season has helped a lot. I’ve been harvesting for six straight days from 5th till 10th last week! It was too much for us so I shared them with my sisters.

Some beans I’m leaving to age for the seeds.

My eggplants were looking pretty miserable until I started fertilising regularly.

Eggplant seedlings ready to be transplanted.

My grapevine, planted in a medium sized pot (😱) in October 2015, has finally produced some fruits (two bunches, to be exact 😅).

Strawberries I’m experimenting with. Planted them at the edge of my raised bed, from one single plant with runners along each side. They are doing extremely well at the moment. I’ve not seen leaves these large and healthy! Hope they fruit 🤞🏻

Some strawberries in pots which I plan to give to gardener friends.

My lemon tree. Just one fruit this time 😂

Some other plants and herbs in my garden.

Dill

Curry leaves

Indian borage

Aloe vera

Serai (lemongrass)

Pandan (screw pine)

Some succulants I just propagated.

My plants usually get attacked by aphids and other pests, including snails, but lately I’ve been very lucky because all my plants are pest-free! Yay!

It’s hard to tell if fertilisers are truly organic so I opted for goat manure that looked the least processed. See the goat fur? 😁

They are very hard so I pound them lightly to loosen them and store them in containers.

I’m not giving up on the vegetables I’ve failed at. Hopefully I’ll have something to show next month 😊🤞🏻

Erm...too many photos? Let me know 😬

Oh wow! You are growing most of the spices and vegetables I used to buy from market!! Very well done!

Thank you 😊

Love the greens, i love to plant my own greens soon, wait til i built my own house now.. still doing the house prefered design. You really have green hands .

Good luck with your new house! How exciting! If I had green hands my other vegetables would have been successful! 😂

Awesome pictures from your garden, @crazymum.
May I ask where in the world you're at?

That grapevine looks very beautiful on top of that roof.

A tip against slugs and aphids: they don't like garlic.I plant garlic all around my garden and I spray my plants wih a gardlic/neemoil spray and these last two years that has done the job quite well.

Aphids are very fond of nasturtiums and calendula flowers, so if you plant those next to your other plants, most aphids will gather on the nasturtiums and calendula flowers, being less interested in the rest.

Thanks so much for the compliment.

I’m from Malaysia (very famous now, I’m sure!). We can sow and harvest pretty much the whole year round. The only season we might have to worry about is the rainy/monsoon season where we get too much water and not enough sun.

The grapevine is on a pergola under my balcony.

Thanks so much for the tips on pest-control. I’ve not seen nasturtiums nor calendulas in Malaysia. I’ll have to ask @rpattwell (from UK) if she can get the seeds for me.

What a pleasure it must be to be able to grow veggies almost all year long...
If we're lucky we can start in May and end in October, and we'll have some nice weather in between (like this year). But it wouldn't be the first time that it rains all summer...

Oh wow! I envy your talent in gardening (psst... and your garden too). I wish my vegetables can grow like yours. Haha

Thanks but I think it’s perseverance rather than talent. I’ve failed a few times with some other vegetables but I’m not giving up. So don’t you give up! You’ll get there! 💪🏻
