Manager's Corner: First Mover Advantage

Welcome to the first edition of Manager's Corner, a blog dedicated to Genesis League Goals. In this blog we will examine various aspects of this new NFT based soccer game from the point of view of the owner and general manager of team NFTs within the game. This blog will cover various topics from one article to the next, such as the price of cards on the market, team composition, game analysis and strategy, tokenomics, future predictions, etc. I do not give financial advice. I am a hockey fan at heart and veteran of Eastside Hockey Manager leagues, and as such I am hugely excited to have a web3 equivalent experience. I am also a Splinterlands player and asset holder, known as Leq on the GLG and SPL discord channels. With no further ado, let us move on to the first topic, which is first mover advantage!

At the time of writing this article, the game is in closed beta. Lots of packs have been opened, but cards cannot be combined yet and rewards are not live, which puts us in an interesting period of speculation and flipping. The best cards in the game are still well within reach of the average player, whether in regular or gold foil versions, provided that one does not get too ambitious with the number of copies they desire. If all you want is to play an all-star team of Luiz Araujo, Claudio Bravo and crew, however, you can swoop in with a fifty dollar budget and get all the regular foil players you desire, in order to be ready for the full release of the game.

This leads one to wonder, how long will that continue to be the case? First impressions of the game tell us of the importance of having the players with the best stats, in order to secure the highest percentage chances of success in actions, which will lead to wins in games. As in Splinterlands, the key is to win more often than you lose in order to rise in rankings and secure the best rewards. How long will loose copies of superstars like Luiz, Gregore, Bravo and others remain affordable on the market when all one has to do is buy a single BCX to have a key component of a competitive team? Those cards remain better than other inferior players even if those players are leveled up and the superstars remain at level 1. How long until the market catches up to that reality? Will the price explode as a result of the advertisement campaign bringing new eyeballs to the market, and the inherent scarcity of these superstar cards?

This is why we are in a golden window of time to accumulate all the cards needed to play the game at the highest levels, for the short to medium term. Those of us that are here at this time have the first mover advantage over those that will arrive when the game is in full swing. In the next edition, I will present my initial team and we will do an overview of the market to see what the best finds are. Stay tuned and thank you for reading thus far!
