The Path of Least Time – The Lesson of the Light

I was watching the hilarious sitcom, Last Man Standing the other night before going to bed. I like something light, that allows my brain to change directions from business mode to sleeping mode before heading to bed.

In this episode, the main character Mike Baxter, brilliantly played by Tim Allen (From the sitcom Tool Time and he’s ex-con – he paid his dues), talked about how light bends when going from air to water and I thought; “there’s a good lesson there.”

Light is generally thought to travel at 186,000 miles per second; however, it does travel at different speeds through different media as when you shine light from air to water.

But for our purposes, there’s something even more interesting.

Light bends in such a way that it takes the path it will require the least possible time.

Think about this. If you are an explorer in space, all you need to do is shoot a beam of light to your destination and follow it to arrive in the least possible time.

I don’t know about you, but cutting my travel time would be a great thing. Now I just need to figure out how to shorten those TSA line ups.

But back to the light…

Light doesn’t automatically know the shortest route. It travels in “waves” that carve out the best path – every time!

This is known as Snell’s law, the law of “least propagation time”.

There are a number of mathematical calculations you can do to prove this, but let’s leave that for another day.

But by now, I’ll bet you are asking where the lesson is, right?
