actually, your understanding is incorrect. Several weeks ago GC demanded that the bid bots all refuse to sell to anyone who wanted a vote on a post older than 3.5 days. No clear reason other than he demanded it. The structure of the block allows for upvotes up to 6.5 days from the time of the post.

The majority of the bots eventually complied with his bullying after he hit enough minnows with huge downvotes. These were not necessarily people who regularly used bots, they were just people who happened to use a bot (and only certain bots) and GC used them as collateral damage in his campaign to bully the bot owners into compliance.

There is a problem with bid bots accepting votes from creators of spam and shitposts. Some of the more responsible owners have been taking action to create blacklists which bars those known to do this from the bots. That hasn't stopped GC from his often indiscriminate attacks even on people who have used GC compliant bots.

I had used a bot on the two posts, some thing I rarely do. The attacks on me were part of a group of attacks that had nothing to do with anyone using bid bots. I'm preparing a post about that. His attacks were designed to silence... guess what... I don't shut up for bullies.

Well then, I stand corrected. 😐

I have come full circle on the issue of bid-bots. I now believe there are far worse things than someone investing their own money to promote content. If the content is of a good, fair or downright bad quality, it is still the person's choice to invest in it in whichever way he sees fit. I no longer agree there is really something one can call abuse of a bid bot. Whichever way one tries to define it, it isn't really abuse. It may be in your or my opinion, foolish to invest in poor content - but it isn't an abuse of a bid bot.

It is far uglier (abusive) to curry favour with bullies or other influencers in the hope they will upvote your content. This is something I see in many of the so-called curating leagues (not all of them). A lot of the content is sub-standard, yet it continually gets supported because it is profitable for that league or group to continue to uphold the illusion. Content like this post by @snook for instance, is far more worthy of trending than any random selection of some of the circle-jerking posts who shall remain nameless here ;-)
