The humanity of Habitat for Humanity

My newest interest is Habitat for Humanity. It is a Christian organization that helps build and remodel homes for people.

I have been volunteering on Saturday mornings in Phoenix Arizona. I am very excited because I started my experience and the first day of the build for Stephanie's home.

There are certain people that come out each week and then other volunteers that rotate each week depending on the company or group that signed up to help that week. It is amazing to see the community support. The other thing that I really like about Habitat for Humanity is that Stephanie, the homeowner, is there each week working on her home. Her teenage daughter often comes too. Her son is too young to be on the construction site. He was there for the ceremony.

Last week we had a little down time while things were being measured out on the 2nd floor. Stephanie and I talked and I learned more about her life and story. Wow, she has been through so much basically being on her own since she was 11 years old. In addition to learned so much about building a house I am learning more about the people on the construction site and that really brings the humanity to this project.

One the first day of the build there was a very nice ceremony and then the people from Habitat for Humanity gave us all markers and encouraged us to write blessings for Stephanie and her family on the walls. The man said that even though the saying will be covered that Stephanie will know that those blessings are all over the walls of her home.

My favorite time during the week is now Saturday mornings. It is such a special opportunity to help someone and learn so much at the same time. In my next post I will talk about the things I am learning about building a house.

Hi @wrestlingdesires I looked up Habitat for Humanity online and signed up to volunteer. It was a bit difficult to find a time that was open to individual volunteers.

I'm glad you were able to find a time that worked 🙌 How long will it take to complete the home?

I think they are planning on 3-4 months. They started in February and want to finish before the summer heat so April or May. They are working on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

She must be so excited that she'll be in her new home soon!!! I know if it were me, I wouldn't be able to wait 😂

I'm really impressed by the initiative, with the help of these houses, we can give house to more and more people who don't have their house. who is paying for material being used to built this house ?

Hi @itwithsm. My understanding is that there are organizations that donate money for both the supplies and people to help build. For this home there are three companies that were recognized on the first day of the build.

got it, thanks for clarifying @sjarvie5

I think this HFH is great. I am a carpenter of almost 30 years. The reason why I don't give my services to these HFH is because those who stand around get paid, and me with 30 years experience doesn't get paid. Its not the point of getting paid because I have given my service to many for free, and refused money when they tried to offer it to me when project was completed. I don't mind working for free for a good cause. But the way I see it is everyone should be doing it for free. Even the person who called me to see if I would volunteer was getting paid, lol. I don't do charity work like that. If my time is for free so should be everyone else involved in project. Tis is a great opportunity to help the homeless and poor, but you got greedy ppl working inside that do nothing but whip ppl to get that house done. That doesn't work for me. I do my own charity work, I get no credit for doing it, I don't want the credit because it was all volunteer. And all the money I give to the homeless goes 100% to that homeless person not 10 cents of every $1 like most charities do. It doesn't matter if I give $1 or $100 it all goes to them, none for me for doing a service of giving charity to the poor. And that is why I also do not support any kind of charity. To many greedy ppl hiding in there. I personally think if a charity makes a million dollars that whole million dollars should go to those who need it, not the 90% to the charity and 10% to those who need it. Sorry if this offends anyone. But all charities offend me by robbing those who give to charities, and robbing those who need the help most. To me that ios more offensive than those who refuse to give to any charity.
