We all know that getting a good night's sleep is very important to our health. Getting an uninterrupted night of sleep will have you feeling refreshed, and ready to take on your day. The importance of getting a good night sleep can go far beyond a better mood or increased energy levels. Scientists, in recent years, have gone to great lengths to learn more about the health benefits that sleep can bring you. In this post, I will be talking about 6 ways sleep can enhance your health.
Studies have shown that sleep can have a positive impact on your memory. When you get a good night's sleep, the ability to remember things is improved. Researchers are in the belief that this is caused by the process known as memory consolidation. This is when the brain recalls the skills that are learned when you are awake.
Sleep can be thought of as nutrition for the brain. The chances of losing concentration during the day are lessened when you are getting enough sleep. Getting enough sleep makes you more alert while completing tasks, makes you more productive, and has you performing better.
The body makes the muscle building process happen when sleeping. This is because it releases growth hormones and builds new muscle cells. Not only are your cells revitalized and renewed, but repairs to any damaged tissue happens. This is especially helpful to those who participate in weight training workouts, as these types of exercise routines need sleep to repair the slight tears that happen to your muscles during this type of training. Sleep will give you the adequate recovery time to help repair your muscles and have them stronger than before.
Researchers have discovered that getting enough sleep can accelerate the speed at which your body burns fat and also control your appetite. Sleeping will regulate the levels of the two hormones that control appetite and hunger, leptin and ghrelin. It also stimulates the production of HGH, a hormone that speeds up and supports the fat burning process.
Getting a good night's sleep can help improve your performance in whatever task you are involved in. Stanford University researches did a study on college football players who got at least 10 hours of sleep a day over several weeks. They found the well-rested athletes were less tired, had more stamina, and increased sprint times.
When you don't get enough sleep, your body becomes stressed. There is a spike in the stress hormone cortisol and also an increase in blood pressure. High blood pressure will increase your risk of having a stroke or heart attack and being stressed can lead to weight gain or depression. Getting enough sleep can help keep you out of stress mode and have you more relaxed and calm.
As you can see, there are many reasons to you should be trying to get quality sleep. It is important that sleep is treated as being just as important as eating healthy and exercising when wanting to better our health and well-being.
