I started on Steemit two years ago and wrote first blog articles on marketing for small businesses. I still practice the art and skills of digital marketing for 2 small accounts but have turned a corner in my ever-evolving career and life interests.
I remain a licensed clinical social worker, it's not just what I am, it's who I am. I thought I was ready to dip my toe back into healthcare after "the great atrocity" of November 2014. I accepted a position as Director of Social Services at a skilled and long-term nursing facility this past February. At the time I had no idea that I was about to witness a most horrific display of leadership and healthcare system indifferences. I can never undo what I saw, heard, and felt during 3 intense months immersed in what is genuinely the worst work experience I have ever known ... and I have seen and tolerated a lot.
I ultimately resigned citing reasons of being at significant risk for violating my professional ethical code of conduct via my association with a facility that was continuously violating human rights without consulting or involving me as the Director of Social Services. I gave a month's notice in my resignation, which is recommended (for a good reason) by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). The Executive Administrator's response?
"Thank you for giving a month for notice. You can always count on me for an excellent recommendation. I support your decision. I think you are almost too ethical for the job."
What!?
Meanwhile, the Director of Nursing - lauded for her ability to traffic residents in and out of the facility like dispensable garbage - has a public criminal record and conviction for both, bodily harm and injury to a child and a federal felony of committing welfare fraud. I am not sure how she became an RN. Additionally, she purported to have a BSN degree (indicating such on her business cards and official facility badge) when in fact she is in progress of working towards the degree by taking classes in her free time.
Let's just stop here and take the time to think about possible implications of the facts above. Think and stay tuned for Pt. 2.
