Genesis 47:1-4

We finished another chapter last week. They are really not that long though they seem like it when reading in a different language. Today, Joseph goes in to talk to Pharaoh...

He tells the ruler that his family is here, letting him know that the flocks and herds are there with them. He states that they have come from Canaan with all their possessions and are waiting in the land of Goshen for their audience with his majesty (if that is what they called him).

Joseph then selection five men out of his brothers to be the first to meet Pharaoh. Remember last week? He had briefed his brothers on how to behave when standing before the powerful man.

Pharaoh asked the questions that were briefed by him last week and they answered as expected, thus making themselves out to be an abomination in the sight of the Egyptians. They then made a plea to be permitted to dwell in the land because the famine is very harsh.

I seem to remember Joseph being offered the land for his family. Then how Pharaoh had sent wagons and gifts to them inviting them to come. I get the feeling this is just a formality. We will hear the answer next week...

So Joseph went in and told I Pharaoh, "My father and my brothers, with their flocks and herds and all that they possess, have come from the land of Canaan. They are now in the land of Goshen." And from among his brothers he took five men and presented them to Pharaoh. Pharaoh said to his brothers, "What is your occupation?" And they said to Pharaoh, "Your servants are shepherds, as our fathers were." They said to Pharaoh, "We have come to sojourn in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants' flocks, for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. And now, please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen."
