This is the second part of a description of a short day-hike at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area in Texas. Part 1 contains introductory material and photos from the Summit Trail that leads up the south side of the Enchanted Rock dome. This post contains photos from the trails around the base of the dome.
Echo Canyon Trail
Echo Canyon Trail goes along the west side of Enchanted Rock between it and a peak called "Little Rock". We traveled the trail from south to north.
↑ Photo 1. A view towards the south near the beginning of the trail. Limestone mesas can be seen through the trees and scrub.
↑ Photo 2. A view towards the northwest. Prickly Pears in desert scrub and the granite slabs of Little Rock peak are visible.
↑ Photo 3. A "Crevice Spiny Lizard"
↑ Photo 4. A "Hoodoo" which is formed by erosion in igneous terrain when a top layer is more resistant to erosion than the rock beneath it. To the right are the granite sheets of Enchanted Rock.
↑ Photo 5. Boulders at the north end of the Echo Canyon Trail.
Turkey Pass Trail
Turkey Pass Trail goes along the east side of Enchanted Rock between it and "Turkey Peak". We traveled the trail from north to south.
↑ Photo 1. A little cactus.
↑ Photo2. A blooming Claret Cup Cactus.
↑ Photo3. A group of "Hoodoos" with a accentuated erosion-resistant tops.
I love the lizard!
Flowering cacti in the spring are beautiful.
As much time as I've spent in Texas I never went to Enchanted Rock. It's beautiful and your descriptions make your pictures real and come alive.
Thank you!
