Brauner Eichen-Zipfelfalter ■ The ilex hairstreak

Satyrium ilicis (Esper, 1779)

In den vergangenen Tagen habe Bilder vom Sommer begutachtet und fehlende Artenbestimmung vorgenommen. Im Verlauf eines Jahres sammeln sich schnell mehrere tausend Bilder auf meiner Festplatte. Jedes Bild will korrekt benannt werden, bevor ich es in meine Datenbank ablege. Eine große Überraschung war für mich der nachfolgende Falter. In der Natur ist es sehr schwer, die kleinen Schmetterlinge zu unterscheiden. Eine Makroaufnahme bringt meistens Klarheit. Es sind nur winzige optische Merkmale, welche die unterschiedlichen Arten voneinander trennen. So kann der Eichenzipfelfalter sehr leicht mit dem Schlehenzipfelfalter verwechselt werden. Zur Unterscheidung muss genau auf die Anordnung der weißen Linien auf der Flügelunterseite geachtet werden.

Over the past few days, he has been looking at pictures of the summer and has made a lack of species identification. In the course of a year, several thousand pictures quickly accumulate on my hard disk. Every picture needs to be named correctly before I put it into my database. A big surprise for me was the following butterfly. In nature it is very difficult to distinguish the small butterflies. A macro shot usually brings clarity. It is only tiny optical features that separate the different species from each other. So the ilex hairstreak butterfly can easily be confused with the sloe hairstreak butterfly. To differentiate, the arrangement of the white lines on the underside of the wings must be carefully observed.

Kleiner Schlehen-Zipfelfalter ■ The sloe hairstreak

Satyrium acaciae (Fabricius, 1787)

Der kleine Schlehenzipfelfalter und der braune Eichenzipfelfalter sind optisch sehr ähnlich. In den Gebieten, in denen er vorkommt, kann er sehr zahlreich beobachtet werden. Wenn dann noch weitere Arten, die sich optisch ähnlich sind, die Schafgarbe (Achillea) teilen, wird eine exakte Bestimmung mit dem Auge schwierig. Ich habe jeden Falter, der meinen Weg kreuzte, fotografiert. Zu Hause am Computer kann ich die Unterscheidungsmerkmale vergleichen.

The sloe hairstreak butterfly and the the ilex hairstreak butterfly are visually very similar. In the areas where it occurs, it can be observed in great numbers. If other species that are optically similar share the yarrow (Achillea), an exact determination with the eye becomes difficult. I have photographed every butterfly that crossed my path. At home on the computer I can compare the distinguishing features.

Freude und Hoffnung liegen ganz nahe beieinander. So habe ich diesen Ulmenzipfelfalter auf Brombeerblätter am Wegrand entdeckt. Er hat mir nur dieses eine Bild gegönnt. Dann flog er davon und hat sich mir nicht mehr gezeigt. In der Hoffnung, dass er sich noch einmal auftaucht, habe ich an der Stelle bestimmt eine Stunde verbracht. Leider ohne Erfolg. Alle drei von mir gezeigten Arten wurden von mir am gleichen Tag fotografiert. Es gibt jedoch noch weitere Arten, die den hier gezeigten Schmetterlingen optisch ähnlich sind.

Joy and hope are very close together. This is how I discovered this white-letter hairstreak butterfly on blackberry leaves at the edge of the path. He only allowed me this one picture. Then it flew away and never showed itself to me again. In the hope that it would show up again, I spent at least an hour at that spot. Unfortunately without success. All three species I showed were photographed by me on the same day. There are, however, other species that are visually similar to the butterflies shown here.
